Black and white photo of Carrie Robinson, a Black woman wearing a scarf and glasses. Text reads "Hidden Figures of ALA: Carrie Robinson". ALA150 American Library Association
In 1969, Carrie Coleman Robinson, a Black school librarian in Alabama, brought a landmark case to the U.S. District Court against the state's Department of Education—one that reveals much about the Jim Crow South and librarianship in the civil rights era. #ALA150

They give VPs the thankless jobs.
It’s a natural reaction. We’re a little surprised he didn’t push the big bottom.
The guide ropes are gone. He's completely out of control.

Once again we ask you to support libraries. Thank you!
Once more unto the breach, dear friends…

One of the biggest issues facing our democracy isn't polarization or partisanship - it's apathy. The antidote? Get involved locally. Read our partner Run for Something Civics new post: uniteagainstbookbans.org/on-national-run-for-offi...
NEW: ALA reaffirms our opposition to HR 7661, misguided federal book banning legislation in the House of Representatives. At a committee hearing on the bill today, @repbonamici.bsky.social read our statement emphasizing that "Parents, not politicians, should guide their children’s reading."
We need your support to do this!

New: ALA joined the Assoc. of Research Libraries to send a letter to Congress this week in opposition to the repeal of Section 230.
Libraries of all types rely on Sec. 230 protection from lawsuits over patrons' online activity or use of digital library materials. More: www.ala.org/news/2026/03...

Great. Just great.
First portion of a letter from ALA to Chairman Risch and Ranking Member Shaheen on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "Re: S.3733, Community Passport Services Access Act - SUPPORT. Dear Chairman Risch and Ranking Member Shaheen, On behalf of the American Library Association (ALA), I write in support of S. 3733, the Community Passport Services Access Act, and its House companion, H.R. 6997. These bills would allow nonprofit public libraries to continue serving as passport acceptance facilities designated by the State Department. Many libraries across the country serve as passport acceptance facilities. These libraries offer a convenient location for Americans to apply for a U.S. passport, especially in rural areas which may be distant from other passport acceptance facilities."
ALA reiterates our strong support for proposed legislation in Congress to protect passport acceptance services at nonprofit libraries. As we said in a letter to Congressional committee leadership, thousands of Americans use these critical services.

If you are in the Austin area next month I’ll be around talking about voting rights at the LBJ Library! Put it on your calendars!

Adding my voice of outrage. Yet again I will be calling my senators, reps and, and and…

Libraries had a big day on Capitol Hill.
First, thank you Rep Adelita Grijalva for meeting with ALA!
We were proud to present her with a vintage Read poster featuring her father, library champion Rep Raúl Grijalva, pictured with her daughter. We couldn't think of a better way to welcome her to DC!
