First reaction: JFC, *McClatchy* is doing this?

So I am reflecting on AI as one does and I have come to realize that “learn to use AI” and “embrace AI” and “develop AI literacy” won’t fucking protect ua from existential and stochastic harms of AI, and my overlooking this as a vector for criticism is really something.

Seems like some folks think "the trolley problem is easy! Just flip the switch, it's obvious".

Patrick Stewart would disprove this implication.

Sure, unless the laws being written in your state and supported by those who say they'll preserve democracy are targeting you or your children or your kin and kind directly.

Does that mean he though he could supply a whole ship with one loaf and one fish WITHOUT Jesus active and present?

Probably, but I lose track.

I'm at a loss to see your actual point.

Well, I seem to recall a case where they needed 7 dems and magically 7 dems voted that way...

Is my impression correct that I the last few votes where 1-5 votes made a difference, exactly enough Democrats voted along with the Republicans to ensure the Republican-desired outcome?

Yeah, as a person who likes plesiosaurs more than any actual dinosaur*, seeing other non-dinos get honorary dino status just ensaddens me.

*My favourite **dinosaur** is brontosaurus or diplodocus.

- I prefer it when that's accomplished by picking candidates who already stand for the party's values and getting solidarity because they believe. Not by welcoming in anyone, then demanding they *submit* to authority.

Harper was the one I was thinking of who punished party members for dissent.

I think you might be arguing against a position even more extreme than what I stated. Because I said the right to dissent OR depart. I'm very willing to say some votes should be at least closer to mandatory party line than others... but -

Cup in dark brown clay with a loosely carved rendition of Winnipeg's Union Station arch front and centre, flanked by two pillared sections, and with the VIA logo and maple leaf at the top. Clay is now dry but hasn't yet gone in the kiln.

I dunno what it is, I carve architecture way more casually and "let's eyeball it" than I do swirly designs...

Cup in dark brown clay, showing the four rows of windows, the pillared front face just visible to the side. The bottom row is arched, the others rectangles, all but one single set in pairs.

Cup in dark brown clay with a loosely rendering of the Union Station carved into it, this time held up in a hand to show the base, trimmed into concentric rings. From here it's a bit more obvious the pillared areas are added on, while the centre of the arch ends up cutting well into the outer ring of the base.

So... last week's work, since I was brilliant and forgot to actually, y'know, take pictures last week.

I also forgot to take pictures of this week's work this week. But it was glazing, which isn't exciting till it emerges, and refining stuff already basically carved.

Real alt text: the scene in Inglourious Basterds where a resistance member gives himself away to the Nazis by casually holding up three fingers, where Germans hold up two fingers and the thumb, to indicate 3.

Would you say that if it was a Conservative majority voting AGAINSTgay marriage or a woman's right to choose, or would you say that even when 80% of their constituents are asking them not to vote party line, they must still obey?

Solidarity does not mean blind lockstep obedience.

What you're saying is that the will of the PM counts more than the will of the people.
If you want a unanimous party vote, write legislature that doesn't force them to choose. This is eminently possible; it would happen the vast majority of the time. But the right to dissent, or depart, matters.

6 days ago 0 0 1 0

Uh, no. You can be part of a group overall because you slign 90%, and still have a moral right to a dissenting vote if you feel it genuinely represents you or especially your constituents better.

Mony mony, surely. (Those are the whole two songs I know and I overall agree with your point, but the trouble Mony Mony caused to high school dances was a thing for a long long time after it was actually a hit.)

I would have agreed with you... but draw the line at point where party members get in trouble for NOT voting strict party line even when they can demonstrate that the constituents they represent wanted them to vote otherwise. And that HAS happened, and should not be allowed.

1 week ago 0 0 1 0

Um, there are places with laws saying you can't give *water* to people in line in hot weather due to claims it counts as "influencing the vote", and you think they'll have the energy or permission for a 6 hour dance party...

And allow for alternative means to vote for the kind of workers who can't be spared, and undo laws that require more ID to vote than to do almost anything else.

Figured it might be time to do another 30 song challenge, except with ONLY songs I have discovered/purchased within the last year, since I seem to have gone down a massive rabbit hole.

Still undecided on the bigger project, but I had to share this RIGHT NOW:

Sesame Street used to have writers who specialize in that not-quite-soundalike, so much so that even though I KNOW "letter B" was not sung to "let it be" I can't remember it as anything but the Beatles unless I'm looking right at the video.

Now they just get the artist themselves on instead.

Ooh, this is so much up my alley right now it's not even funny. Stunning.

Read the article. It's not about the women or girls who came forward; one of the people involved even says those women are a "distraction from the real victims".

I agree that those genres don't belong together but the dig at faith was unnecessary and ruined the point.
