Operating Systems: Principles and Practice by Tom Anderson and Michael Dahlin is my favorite, but Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces by Remzi & Andrea Arpaci-Dusseau is also very good and is freely available online.

I'm on a plane, and my flight is delayed for over 2 hours. Why? First, they had to replace a seat belt. But their computer system didn't recognize the new part number. As a result, they have to replace the entire seat before the plane is allowed to move. The computer made things less efficient...
