@werd.io Not sure if shareopenly.org is open source, but I had a question about if it would be possible to support sharing with text and no link. It seems like in the end it's usually just putting the link in text to share anyway? And then it could be used for all sharing scenarios.

Protocols don’t have an interface, but most XMPP clients these days look like WhatsApp or other similar modern apps. It’s all down to what you prefer. (http://sngpl.ma/t5gc3

Chat channels in XMPP protocol are by design always organized into server/guilds/components. It’s up to hosters how they choose to manage this though and there is no discord-like UI except maybe the Prose app (http://sngpl.ma/t5gc0

The ability to have apps that meet specific needs is a strength of an open ecosystem, but I agree it can be harder to nagivate if you’re just searching for something as generic as ‘XMPP’ — the Snikket and Cheogram families of apps are working on unified branding for a set […] http://sngpl.ma/t5gZ4

@jampants.net If you’re going to try the Jabber network I’d suggest a more full-featured app and not something like Pidgin. (http://sngpl.ma/t5gZ3

@jacky.wtf Note that if you are mobile E911 isn’t very useful and if you have a cell with no SIM in it, it can call 911 much better. (http://sngpl.ma/t5fo0

Technically the killed Google Talk entirely as a product. But yes, the effect was similar for many people. (http://sngpl.ma/t5fm1

@remy.has.pawtism.lol what issues are you having with the prosody docs? You’re right it won’t work behind cloudflare because it’s not a web service, it needs access to real ports. You may also be interested in https://snikket.org/service/quickstart/ (http://sngpl.ma/t5fm0

It’s more nuanced, sadly: in the very beginning of Matrix (Sep 2014), I did position it as a reaction to XMPP… because that was what it was. This caused extreme irritation with XMPP fans, which in retrospect could & should have been avoided. We consciously stopped making the comparison in ~Dec 2014.

This is a periodic reminder that Facebook never federated with XMPP and thus never turned it off. This is a pervasive myth. (Google did federate and eventually killed the whole product that federated, but Facebook never federated atall with XMPP.) (sngpl.ma/t5e01)

There is a hierarchical version of xmpp: URIs but it is rarely used since that would denote a server to connect to and usually you just want to mention an address (ala mailto: or tel: or sms: URIs) (sngpl.ma/t5e00)

You can move you account to another server, I do it all the time! It uses the same technology as ATProto names, where DNS can delegate what server to use for the name (http://sngpl.ma/t5dX0

We’ve had that for years with xmpp.org/extensions/x... but RELOAD is an attempt to modernize this for LAN/ad-hoc network use cases.

These aren’t really the same kind of thing. XMPP for sure, maybe over websocket as a transport if you’re in a browser. (http://sngpl.ma/t5c80
