Fossil fuel dependence is now a macroeconomic risk driving global inflation and eroding financial stability, says @andreassieber.bsky.social. The only route to long-term energy security and resilience is a renewable energy transition.

Hungary’s election tomorrow is likely to be the country’s most consequential since the fall of communism — but it won’t be a fair contest.
The corrupt autocrat Viktor Orbán has seen to that.

When it comes to the energy transition I'm a glass half full person.
I know: plenty of people would say that's terribly naive. They point to the scale of the challenge. They point to vested interests. They point to hard-to-abate sectors.
And they're not wrong. But here's what they miss.

Who's profiting from ridiculous and unnecessary wars? Big Oil CEOs, to name one obvious group. @emorwee.bsky.social

💥 5 countries ask the #EU to tax the obscene #windfall profits of #fossilfuel companies.
At @350.org, we calculate 100bn+ has been transferred in excess costs to these companies just in 1st month of war.
The countries: Austria, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

👀 Wow !
The #EuropeanCentralBank just declared #fossilfuels a threat to the economy of #Europe. Not about what, but ❗ who ❗ says this.
Yes, obvious. So this isn’t new. But hearing it from the ECB is.
Energy transition isn’t only about #climate anymore.

In just weeks, world leaders head to Santa Marta, Colombia for the FIRST-EVER international conference on phasing out fossil fuels.Tell EU Climate Commissioner Hoekstra: show up with real plans to end coal, oil, and gas not just speeches.

A fitting headline for April 1st but actually no joke: Total says it cannot formulate net zero targets 🫢

I am confident ff subsidies are on the list of topics, a breakthrough in one conference is too much expectation, subsidies are very hard to remove unfortunately.
its a general phase out, I expect the focus will be on energy as a first step but the idea + we should push for comprehensive ffpo

At COP30, 30 initially signed the pledge to attend the conference, this is some significant growth since then and a show of force, we might even see a few more governments joining until then.
💥 WOW! Already 44 ❗ countries are now officially confirmed to attend the first conference on the phase out of #fossilfuels in St. Marta this April - full list below:
🌎 This includes both fossil fuel producer & consumer countries from across the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Pacific.

📈 This does not even include wider knock-on effects, like rising fertiliser + food costs, declines in economic output, or broader inflation driven by fossil fuel price volatility
The true economic damage is likely significantly higher than the losses from oil and gas prices alone.

🚨BREAKING: Over $100BN lost to #Oil and #Gas Price Spikes in 1st Month of #Iran War, @350.org analysis shows.
🤯 We estimate $104.2–$111.6 billion has been siphoned from ordinary people to oil and gas companies in the first month alone, enough to build #solar power for 150 million households.

thanks! important nuance, but two states is already quite something, just as the headline implies its only one...
Brilliant idea: Free public transport introduced across #Australia in reaponse to #fossilfuel prices
No shit, Sherlock. 🕵️♂️: Shell is worried that the #Iran war and #fossilfuel supply shock is “undermining consumer confidence"?
Wars, chokepoints, and political brinkmanship send prices spiking overnight, customers don’t get the “wrong signal.” They get the bill.
Its important to recognize the scale of this #fossilfuel crisis.
And anticipate the horrific humanitarian carnage if decision makers don’t act decisively.

Whats in there for 2035?
➡️ 47% reduction in emissions intensity of GDP by 2035 (vs. 2005)
➡️ 60% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2035 (watch out: installed is not actual generation).
➡️ 3.5–4.0 billion tonnes CO₂ equivalent carbon sink by 2035

And it has done so in a moment when the world is in turmoil and make no mistake that includes pressure from the hashtag#Trump administration on India to slow down climate action. So moving ahead is welcome and a clear sign of support of the hashtag#ParisAgreement.
