Keep thinking that cruel optimism has shifted toward something like cruel inertia—feeling the enshitification of everything but repeatedly choosing the wan comfort of stasis over the minor inconveniences of salutary change

Waking up to discover that evidence has been released proving something we all knew. The Supreme Court's efforts to stop the Obama clean power plant rules were rooted in explicit, corrupt efforts to protect the fossil fuel industry.
Sometimes it's hard to understand the causes of climate change. While the basic idea -- we emit greenhouse gases, which warm the planet -- is well known, it's easy to get lost in the details.
But here's a summary with some more detail -- showing the fundamental sources & sinks of warming pollution.
Bad news - we'll soon blow through the carbon budget for stabilizing global temperature at 1.5C
Good news - progress on clean energy suggests it is possible to stabilize by 2C www.nature.com/articles/s41...
What does the science say? Neither is a magic threshold. Every bit of warming matters.
On April 15, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Three male narco-terrorists were killed during this action. No U.S. military forces were harmed. @DeptofWar #OpSouthernSpear
Despite the administration’s rhetoric and bogus legal theories, the supposed armed conflict with “narco-terrorists” appears to be entirely make believe.
Murder is the general term for premeditated killing outside of armed conflict.

This is FANTASTIC news. A street redesign that connects Grand Army Plaza to Prospect Park will be a huge win for a safer & a more livable Brooklyn. (1/2)
A milestone in March: for the first time ever, renewables provided more power on the US grid than natural gas.
I've studied so many concentration camps through history that held vulnerable people in just this kind of crowded squalor. You demonize people, you demand more arrests, this is what you get. It already has its own budget and its own momentum, and is on track to go much further, unless we stop it.
Walked past the old post office building yesterday, across from Union Station, and was struck by the inscription (which I’d somehow never noticed):
“Messenger of sympathy and love /
Servant of parted friends /
Consoler of the lonely /
Bond of the scattered family /
Enlarger of the common life.”
Wildlife trade drives animal-to-human pathogen transmission over 40 years
New in @science.org ‼️ In the most comprehensive study to date, we show that wildlife trade is driving animal-to-human zoonotic spillover at a planetary scale, with +1 spillover per host every 10 years. Live animal markets and illegal trade pose even greater risks. 🔓 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
He liked the way she began her fierce, scornful sentences so often with a weak, conciliatory 'well.' She cut the ground out from under them before they ever got going, let them hang unsupported in the void. She had courage, great courage.

Deals are my art form. Some people get their kicks in different ways, but for me it's always been doing beautiful deals.
Deeply shameful to be an American right now. The only thing more shameful is being in a position of power and doing nothing to stop this
