A great proud day for the world of comics!

At the Vermont State House today Steve Bissette was named our 6th Cartoonist Laureate. Also recognized were outgoing laureate Tillie Walden who was laureate #5 and myself who was #1. @cartoonstudies.bsky.social @stephenrbissette.bsky.social

The story was updated to say creators will be consulted and receive royalties, but why did PW agree to publish this before those *very pertinent* details were in the story? Still irks me. It's all so vague.

So sick of AI stuff being shoved down our throats from every direction and we're all just supposed to accept it.

Why even announce this if you aren't going to give a quote or offer clarity about the details of how authors/creators will be involved? Especially as a HarperAlley author; why do I have to go seek out these answers when they could be transparent in the announcement? At least with *some* details. 🙄

Self-Employment, Taxes, and Shame: An Anonymous Author and Tax Preparer Answers Our Questions “There is no moral component to not knowing how much you owe.”

Freelancers of Bluesky, this week’s Scratch newsletter features a long talk with an anonymous author/tax preparer about how our system sets us up to feel extraordinary shame, stress, and guilt around taxes. (This post will always remain unpaywalled, because we think it’s that important.)

Just doing a little math on the difference in royalties I receive on adult books vs kids books and hardcover vs paperback:
50,000 copies of an adult novel in HC
=
1,500,000 copies of a children's illustrated chapter book in PB
Blows my mind. 50k vs 1.5M

ZineMap - Drop Your Zines, Find Your People Explore a global map of the zine universe, track your zines, and discover new places to share your work.

Check out zinemap.com. This international map of zine shops, libraries and events is a stellar resource - lots of community input and some interviews too. Thanks to its creator CJ for telling me about it this morning. Happy to boost this, as it's filled with useful information.

Mine seems obvious, but it's "jair-id" not "juh-rod," which I get with some frequency. Bonus: whenever I say my name has two "a's" people say oh, okay and write it down as Jaared 😑

Ah yes, we too in Vermont have a similar day. Once a spring, a random 40 degree and sunny day where I wear shorts and remember what it means to feel alive. Then I wait two more months for warmth again.
