We recommend avoiding general and often dehumanizing "the" labels such as the poor, the mentally ill, the French, the disabled, the college-educated. Instead, use wording such as people with mental illnesses. And use these descriptions only when clearly relevant.

Joyce Carol Oates
@Joyce... 17h O
So curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciatesâ scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend's or relative's accomplishment; condolences for someone who has died; pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team; references to history. In fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured. The poorest persons on Twitter may have access to more beauty & meaning in life than the
"most wealthy person in the world."

Imagine if other mainstream artists did this on tour. Imagine if they brought tables to their venues to explain to fans why this is so important. It would change the conversation profoundly. This is important.

Unfortunately Glasgow already has this, and medicineâs greatest minds have been unable to figure out why a city with a motorway running through the middle of it has a lower than average life expectancy.

from Camus' "Why Spain?" today: "In the meantime we must struggle. But with the knowledge that totalitarian tyranny is not based on the virtues of the totalitarians. It is based on the mistakes of the liberals. Talleyrandâs remark is contemptible, for a mistake is not worse than a crime. But the mistake eventually justifies the crime and provides its alibi. Then the mistake drives its victims to despair, and that is why it must not be condoned. That is just what I cannot forgive contemporary political society: it is a mechanism for driving men to despair."
Camus explains how liberalism won't help you get out of fascism.

Does this latest MSP defection mean the all male Public Audit Committee at Holyrood gets a membership change? It normally would do because of spots being assigned by party, but IIRC, Jamie Greene has stayed on it (Deputy Convener) upon defecting to the Lib Dems, so I'm not entirely sure?? #anorakQns

War Photographer
by Carol Ann Duffy
In his darkroom he is finally alone
with spools of suffering set out in ordered rows.
The only light is red and softly glows,
as though this were a church and he
a priest preparing to intone a Mass.
Belfast. Beirut. Phnom Penh. All flesh is grass.
He has a job to do. Solutions slop in trays
beneath his hands, which did not tremble then
though seem to now. Rural England. Home again
to ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel,
to fields which donât explode beneath the feet
of running children in a nightmare heat.
Something is happening. A strangerâs features
faintly start to twist before his eyes,
a half-formed ghost. He remembers the cries
of this manâs wife, how he sought approval
without words to do what someone must
and how the blood stained into foreign dust.
A hundred agonies in black-and-white
from which his editor will pick out five or six
for Sundayâs supplement. The readerâs eyeballs prick
with tears between the bath and pre-lunch beers.
From the aeroplane he stares impassively at where
he earns his living and they do not care.
In his darkroom he is finally alone
with spools of suffering set out in ordered rowsâŚ

Just for perspective, a few weeks ago roughly 100,000 turned up for the London Trans+ Pride march. By contrast fewer than 3,000 ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY, have turned up to anti-asylum "protests". Yet we are meant to take the latter as "the voice of the people" and the former as "the minority".

In Dutch, mondegreens are popularly referred to as Mama appelsap ("Mommy apple juice"), from the Michael Jackson song Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' which features the lyrics Mama-se mama-sa ma-ma-coo-sa, and was once misheard as Mama say mama sa mam[a]appelsap.
