'Why is Yes so incredible? It’s the ultimate 'fuck you'. It’s empowering. It’s the song you want to hear as you bin off an ex who has done you wrong. David McAlmont sings how you feel. He’s telling the tale. And he’s got Bernard Butler to back him up'

DIMORPHODONS

Waui

HAND OF GLORY LP/CD/DL

The long-awaited debut album proper from Dimorphodons (aka Will Twynham) filters psychotropic pop smarts through a whole galaxy of mad clattering drums, keening disembodied voices, Flo & Eddie screams, buzzsaw shards of brain-shattering fuzz and feedback, shimmering hall of mirrors keyboard parts, thuggish glam-disco stomps, riffs the size of tectonic plates, blissed out harmonies, astral synth twiddles, sludgy slow-mo doom-stoner grooves, swoonsome spacey baroque flourishes, crystalline jangles, kaleidoscopic waves of overlapping melodies, animal noises, nosebleed-inducing levels of phasing, swooshing oceanic soundscapes and, in "Slave To Rough', an offhand, hilarious bone-dry gag about Status Quo's "Down Down' ("A record by the Status Quo/Not the worst one though").

Waur often has a lot of this going on simultaneously and is all that's good about psychedelia put into a cannon and fired point blank into your ears. It sounds like nothing else ever made, in the best possible way. Face-melting future psych genius.

Congratulations to BRIT winners Charli XCX (Bishop's Stortford College, £38,319 per year), AG Cook (King Alfred School, £27,747) and The Last Dinner Party (Bedales, £52,075) for showing that people from ordinary backgrounds can reach the top in pop music, that most egalitarian of art forms.

Absolutely. Also keep it set around the same era. Still amazes me that it's never been attempted.
