They fled in fear from a U.S. ally. So it went after their families. Rwanda tries to silence critics abroad by targeting relatives back home, at times arresting and torturing them, say former officials and other exiled Rwandans.

Rwanda. (There's a bit of a gloss here over the details of "stopping the genocide," but its good to see this kind of attention to the police state nature of things.) www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/1...

Some people who supported Palestinian freedom for the past 14 months seem upset about Syrians getting freedom from a dictator.

And a lot of people who spent the past 14 months opposing Palestinian freedom are now cheering Syrians getting freedom.

So much moral inconsistency.

The cover of issue 185 of The Continent is an illustration by Ethiopian cartoonist Yemsrach Yetneberk. It depicts two French soldiers, one a standard-bearer, walking away from the graves of the tirailleurs, West African riflemen. The riflemen, who were part of the Second World War effort were not acknowledged by France and were killed when they demanded fair wages when they returned to Senegal. On the ground is the Senegalese flag, demarcated like a roadway with the green, yellow and red stripes with a green star in the middle of the yellow stripe. The words "Revenge of the tirailleurs" are written in the top lefthand corner beneath the words "'The Continent"

Welcome to Issue 185 of The Continent

France isn't having a great month. This week, its government collapsed. And last week, not one but two of its former African colonies told it to get lost. A lot of western analysts are blaming Russia. This misses the point.

Always a joy when @economist.com delivers a self-own so bad that people briefly remember that they are one of the worst rags in the business.

Would love if it stuck this time, but wouldn’t “bet” on it.
