you can do everything right, present compelling arguments for every single decision you've made, and you'll always just be compared to the machine. the machine which is made to confirm its user's biases. your own thought process means nothing if it contradicts the machine.

yeah no I think having dev teams where people trust The Hallucination Machine over their own coworkers is great. I actually love it when people regurgitate a bad summary of some stack overflow pages at me and pretend it's a rock solid argument that their idea is better.

A drawing of a man in a fluffy bright red coat against a background of trees and the sky. The drawing is being used for a fanmade MTG card, a proxy of Ennis, Debate Moderator from Secrets of Strixhaven.

One of the new strixhaven cards reminded me of Booker and I couldn't help but start tinkering with a deck idea and a proxy to go along with it.

update: I got to the island lab last night and the game decided it was finally time to flaunt the horror half of its genre descriptor.

A meme of the Abigale, Poet Laureate MTG card. It says “I’ve only had Abigale for a day and a half, but if anything happened to her I would kill everyone in this room and them myself.”

they weren’t kidding about MTG prereleases being one of the best ways to play, I lost all but one match and it was still so fun

your 13 year old self who would imagine AMVs set to fall out boy is never gone, just hidden, and sometimes all it takes is the right track to come up on shuffle at the right time for her to poke her head back out again

Mox Amber is a quiet image painted with meticulous detail – perhaps too much detail for a tiny trading card. Who would commit to such monotony, knowing it would never be seen at scale?

social media algorithms are funny because one of mine has correctly identified that I am currently very interested in Resident Evil, but it's also serving me content about Project Hail Mary (a movie I do not care about at all) for no other discernable reason except both have a character named Grace

A sketchy drawing of two men, parodying a Batman comic. The one in front says to the other: “This is where I watched my mentor die, Arsen.” The other man responds “Cowabummer.”

"go to hell" is basic. "I hope your favorite newsletter stops curating interesting articles and becomes mostly about peddling AI slop" is smart. it's possible. it's terrifying. it's happening to me.

the sewer elevator section of RE4 got me feeling levels of anxiety I haven't felt since the skyward sword silent realms.

I’m sure I’ll look at this in a few days and kick myself for forgetting one game or another, but off the top of my head here we go:

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.

does it help that I'm emulating the wii version (cause I couldn't be bothered to hook up my actual wii) with the world's most fucked up controller mapping (cause I'm using an xbox controller)? no, not in the slightest. but it's still enjoyable, probably cause the game is just that good.

playing through og RE4 and I think I really like the controls. not cause they're good but it's fun to feel that friction. not being able to move and shoot has me feeling like I've never played a game before and it's all the tenser for it.

What is a degenerate strategy or degenerate game state? I've heard the terms used, but never really thought about exactly what they meant... until now.

This week at Skeleton Code Machine I share what I've learned.

“I dislike social commentary. Like… I really hate it. When I’m reading a book, I just want to be entertained, not preached at by the author. Plus, it ruins the wonder of the story if I know the author has a political or social axe to grind. I no longer speculate about all possible outcomes of the story because I know for a fact that the universe of that book will conspire to ensure that the author’s political agenda is validated. I hate that,” Weir said. “I put no politics or social commentary into my stories at all. Anyone who thinks they see something like that is reading it in on their own. I have no point to make, and I’m not trying to affect the reader’s opinion on anything. My sole job is to entertain, and I stick to that.”

Incredible how a specific brand of smart people can be this dumb sometimes. You don't hate social commentary - you hate social commentary that doesn't conform to your own, and you're normative enough that you don't have to worry about reminding people you are human.

I love reading articles on software architecture cause every now and then you'll come across a sentence like "only use [insert feature here] if constrained to do so by external factors", which is the equivalent seeing "don't open dead inside" scrawled in blood on a door.
