To even start discussing that 53% apparently in favour of rejoining the EU without knowing what is the deal on offer in terms of financial contributions, rebates, currency union and much, much else... is ok to kill some time during the weekend, but nothing more..

Italian PM Meloni greeting the French President Macron, at the start of a meeting on 17 April focused on how to reopen the Strait of Hormuz
When the chips are down Italy plays its key role within the EU and stands by its vital partners in Europe. The identity of the PM (Draghi, Conte, Meloni... you choose...) does not make much of a difference in the end
This assumes people's views will not change as they age. Why political and social attitudes stabilize substantially after one turns 30, things can still evolve—especially in response to major life experiences. The stereotype that people become more conservative with age has some empirical support.
Oh come on now...
This for sure... And the downsides of voting for something one does not understand are very plain for all to see...
How about doing it differently next time, how about doing it better and providing a more solid basis for whatever course of action is agreed upon? In any case, UK is clearly not ready
And why would the EU invite the drunken uncle back to the wedding when he hasn't even stopped shouting at the caterers yet? 🤷

We need a specific term for 'moderating in foreign affairs while bashing "enemies" internally with gusto'
The political theatre is one thing, survival in this crazy world quite another...
... is an acknowledgment of the inevitable in the present circumstances.
(And yes, it is interesting that Meloni no longer feels it necessary to take a swipe at Macron over some minor issue during the event, just to placate her base & give the media something to write about...)
Meloni's choice to remain linked to European powers, go to Paris to discuss how to reopen Strait of Hormuz, join a mission conceived by his close friend ;-) Macron, possibly with minesweeper ships... while denying Italy's Sigonella basis to American planes...
And none of them has believed (rightly) to be strong enough to face fallout this would cause & survive. This of course applies to Meloni. Allegiance is weak in the country, your 28% today can quickly turn into an 18% (& lower), as Berlusconi, Renzi, Salvini, and Grillo all found out in recent years
After Berlusconi lost his Parliamentary majority in 2011 over the reaction of the financial markets to his decisions and behaviour, no Italian PM and governing majority has perceived Italy's (and its own) interests to be best served by placing the country outside the EU tent causing trouble.

Zelensky welcomed in Rome today by both the Italian PM and Italian President.
Orbán and Trump who?
Thinking you can bully an institution that’s outlasted every empire in history is certainly… a choice. 🤡 The ignorance is reaching new heights...
Differences between radical right parties in Europe are only getting wider by the day.

I learn something new every day: trying to force a gentle interaction with something that is intrinsically wild or volatile is futile and dangerous.
Who would have thought.
Open war btw Trump & Meloni today - this has degenerated quickly...
Speaking to Corriere della Sera, & responding to Meloni calling his attacks against Pope "unacceptable", Trump said: "She's the one who is unacceptable, because she doesn't care if Iran has a nuclear weapon and would blow up Italy"
Yes, it is a necessary move given the state of public opinion and the rising price of petrol and gas
Meloni is very much following public opinion here, but for now: expect her to diverge even more
On Hungary, you can read the usual chit-chat about "the end of populism" or you can read informative pieces such as the one below...
Your choice! ;-)
Still: "unprecedented" does not even begin to describe the current situation. But then again, everything involving Trump is unprecedented...
"She doesn't want to help us with NATO, she doesn't want to help us get rid of nuclear weapons. She is very different from what I thought".
Thinking purely in electoral terms, this spat will probably be good for the Italian PM, given how Trump is seen in the country today.
"She just says Italy doesn't want to get involved. Even though Italy gets its oil from there, even though America is very important to Italy. She doesn’t think Italy should be involved. She thinks America should do the work for her,"
"I’m shocked by her", Trump continues. "I thought she had courage; I was wrong,". "Do you like the fact that your Prime Minister is doing nothing to get the oil?"

New bombshell by Meloni today that will go down as a glass of sick in the White House:
"In consideration of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel."
