Maria stands next to her poster entitled Deciphering Disability Narratives in the 3rd to 4th Century Roman Irchester: Looking Past Mobility Impairments. The poster has a purple colour scheme and features two censored images of skeletal elements, and a drawn figure of a classical statue containing the thoracic skeleton of a young woman.

Thank you @babao2025meeting.bsky.social for a great conference! Thoroughly enjoyed all the fascinating presentations, the great discussions, and the chance to present my poster on a few case studies from my PhD research 🦴✨

I'm specifically looking for examples of inclusive/intersectional depictions of Roman society (especially Roman Britain) would love any leads!

Marble relief commemorating either the release from service or the discharge after a draw of two female gladiators, Amazon and Achillia. They are armed, and advancing to attack, with swords and shields. The figure on the right is missing the head. They stand on a platform, and below on each side is the head of a spectator. Inscribed above and on the platform. They are shown with the same equipment as male gladiators, but without helmets.

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, our #ImageOfTheMonth is a marble relief commemorating two female gladiators —Amazon and Achillia.
Found in Halicarnassus, this relief was acquired through donation by the British Museum (1847,0424.19) in 1846, but prior provenience is murky.

Prosthetics and Assistive Technology in Ancient Greece and Rome - Jane Draycott YouTube video by York Ideas

Really loved this lecture by @jldraycott.bsky.social last week on assistive technology in antiquity, and it's now available online! Check it out for a fascinating discussion on how and why prosthetics were used in the past 🏺🦿👨‍🦽

Maria stands off the the side of a pull down screen. The screen shows a slide from her presentation, showing a cartoon woman with a walking stick, an image from a greek vase, and two images of medicinal plants. Maria is standing in front of a chalkboard (which sits behind the pull-down screen) on which two hand turkeys have been drawn.

Had a lovely day at the UCD Archaeology PhD Research day today!
A great chance for all of us to talk through some thoughts from our work so far, and an excuse to show off my romano-british bestie

(the hand turkeys on the chalkboard were paid actors)
