Thanks for sharing. She has a great take. I am more into them with the visuals than without. I think I'm more impressed with the musicianship and how tight everything is than the actual music.
I haven't been looking for lots of takes on that polka dotted band, but Emily the Harpist has such a smart one. I agree (this isn't her take) that the music doesnt hit as hard without the visual, but that's just me. That's not to say that the music isn't out of this world tight.
The Penguins-Flyers game just delivered something I've never seen in a life of watching hockey: 6 guys in one penalty box and 5 in the other. 11 minors in a 30 second span. All we need now is a goalie fight.
Wow, the Coltrane Tiberi tapes Record Store Day teaser sound god awful. Unlistenable, at least for me.
I mean could Winner be any more in the middle of nowhere? Damn.
As someone married to someone from South Dakota, my first question is: How far is Wessington to Winner, SD? Winner is my favorite town in the state, even though I've never been. Rapid and Brookings are cool I guess, but they aren't called Winner. There must be a reason.
Support independent music journalism, especially when it's executed by one of the smartest/most visionary writers & thinkers in rap. Shouts to @passionweiss.bsky.social, long live POW Mag.
Where do I apply?
Oh no. Problematizing. You had it bad. I hope you didn't use nuanced as a verb.
I hope your inner monologue was 100% in passive voice.
At work I was asked to mail something to Beirut. If it was to literally any other part of the world, it would be a totally reasonable request based on what this is for. But sending something to Beirut right now? That's got to cost a fortune, if it even makes it there.
A tweet from Pope Leo XIV that reads: “When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.”
Apparently the Pope has read Baudrillard.
I have no idea what Avec Le Soleil Sortant De Sa Bouche is doing on this. All I know is that it is bananas and I like it. Whatever is in the water in Montreal, I want some. If McGill Queens University Press came knocking on my door I think I'd have to start taking French classes and move north.
Anybody I know make it to Record Store Day?
Leather and latex belong in the bedroom, not the dodgeball court.
I just wish that RSD wasn't used, especially by the jazz labels, as a teaser for later releases. Like that Coltrane thing this year that's just a first hit for that big archive. And will it live up to the hype? I'm sure it's great, but I'm not going to stand in line with just a hope of getting it.
My favorite local shop, which is sadly closing up soon, stopped doing RSD several years ago because he thought it was too much of a pain in the ass. The best part of RSD was when the shop where I used to live would put out their choice used stuff they were keeping off the floor for a couple months.
We hit peak live Bill Evans years ago.
I guess my main takeaway on The Whole Geese Thing is that people might enjoy far weirder music than they generally are exposed to, if they had the chance to check it out...
...so TELL YOUR FRIENDS about that weird band you know!!!
There's only one person who can get Bluesky working again.
I can't wait to dig into this.
Last night I fired up my thrift shop Blip Blox and sent it through a few pedals for great fun. On the right settings it is an overwhelming ear bleeding noise machine. But also it can be so happy. Is it musically useful? I dunno, but it is quite fun. An SP 404 expert could probably make magic.
Are we not entertained?
Passion of the Weiss, the rap site that has let me write about both Thundercat and free jazz freak outs, Mac Miller and Thelonoius Monk, Shabazz Palaces and Shabaka, is now POW MAG. For heads who want great music writing w/ a point of view and w/o pretense, bullshit, or AI. Get some.
I got the cd version of this at a public library sale maybe a year ago. I still haven't listened to it, maybe because I'm worried I will hate it or that it will suck hard.
Perfect album. 15/10. No notes.
Tonight I will find out what this puppy sounds like sent through the Ron Fucking Swanson Super Fuzz pedal. I think it will be life changing.
Yes please. I think most folks would be shocked to learn how much most books are in the red when accounting for overhead costs. People need to know what it takes to make that sausage.
Will you now be able to justify going to the Bologna children's book fair?
