DJing has crossed paths with my experiences in voice-hearing and being a targeted individual. It's still unclear who exactly pulls the strings, but my community is connected to it.

Anyways, here's a playlist of just mixes about the romantic dimensions of the Voices:

I think it's super pointless to paywall callout posts, and I burned my free Substack viewing privileges on it, but Annabel Ross called out Theo Parrish, Avalon Emerson, Tiga, and Underworld as scabs in her Politics of Dancing Substack. So, naming names, which is distinct from Shawn's approach.

Google site: searching Boomkat (and Hardwax) is the way, but if you want a little more editorial diversity, I also suggest Norman Records

A large scale looking map with the title "Welcome to Teabeigh Freeofry" in gently curved text at the top. Light blue sea can be seen on the right edge of the map extending around the top-right corner. The main land area shown in pale brown has two larger green areas to the centre and left with a pale blue river circuiting the largest one in the centre. The green areas are labelled "The Cutoff", "Resonance Hill", "Filter Beds" and "Phuture Grove". Roads across the whole map are in white and buildings in brown. There is a prominent vertical row of buildings to the right of centre labelled "Manchester Mills". Other labelled buildings include "Warehouse District" between three large buildings to the right, "Acid House" to the top-right, "Roland House" and "The Loft" to the bottom.

Hard agree. I posted about it on Twitter on my burner earlier but I think the key in the nebulous idea of "storytelling" (which is the most overused + undeserving term to describe DJs/DJing) is treating DJing as prose. I think of DJing-as-prose in the same way some think of video games as art.

I feel like they wouldn't be doing the same sociopolitical things! There's no consensus political views in dance music, even PLUR has migrated to EDMworld.

DJ sets reveal a lot more about their DJs than I think they realize.

If your socio-political views don't suffuse into your work, what are we even doing here? Pretty but ultimately neutered sonic art? Just plain escapism?

Hi. I’m Chris, and I live in San Francisco. I’ve been writing about left-field electronic music for the past 25 years. My writing has previously been published in XLR8R, Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy, Vice/Noisey, SF Weekly, San Francisco Chronicle, FACT Mag, others I’m forgetting.
