it was made before ESCAPE FROM LA (!), one more reason why LA feels low-rent; Carpenter hired a guy who played the same role in a 250,000 movie!

Obscure YT of the day: Roger Corman made an ESCAPE FROM NY rip off with NEW CRIME CITY (1994)! Rick Rossovich (ROXANNE) is a criminal saving futuristic earth! S.F. earthquake footage is tastelessly used to show post apocalyptic future! Stacy Keach is in it!

Got my hands this weekend on some non-streaming, non bluray, obscure dvds (or in Love's Labour Lost's & Space Truckers' case, DVD-unique Branagh & Gordon commentaries). I'm cool!

Tracy Tynan, costume designer extraordinaire (for Alan Rudolph & many others) offers up an endorsement of my new book (Ok, she's married to Jim McBride). But she digs my intro (even if she spells my name wrong 🫣)

Is it really better to sit through all of KILL BILL in the most recent version w/ the cartoon and all that, or is it better as two different uniquely paced movies? I'm just curious what people thought (I bought the streaming version of the new one, but haven't watched it yet)

Update: Guys, I know THEY ALL LAUGHED has a DVD & it's uploaded it on YT, I was pointing out that the ONLY HD version of it has disappeared, as it was only on HBO Max...but it turns out it IS on Cinemax right now, of all things, so it is still available as opposed to some rights issue..

I don't find his observations on 60s, 80s, 50s & earlier cinema particularly insightful (he's no dummy, but he doesn't stand out in any way in his perceptions on non 70s cinema, and good for him he made a love letter to 60s cinema (more a love letter to 60s tv and George Peppard-type films)

yeah it turns out it was the 50s he bashed: Decade with Hitchcock's Universals, The Searchers, The Band Wagon? Some Like it Hot? Sunset Boulevard? The Thing? Paths of Glory? Rebel Without a Cause? Touch of Evil? He's good on the 70s, absolutely nothing special on anything else.

it was aired, I've presented it as an obscure movie of the day more than once and I think it's from a widescreen airing

Was it Tarantino who said the 60s sucked in cinema? Seems August 1967 had some pretty good choices in New York City:
