Cover of the Sep 1969 issue of Soviet journal Ogonek. Photo taken by Zond-8 spacecraft as it circled the Moon. Quote from Lenin: "All the wonders of technology...will become the property of the people, and from now on, human intelligence and genius will never be turned into a means of violence."
In about 30 minutes we will start the S34 session on maritime modelling at the BIG HΓΆrsaal! I will talk about the oddities of sending a software engineer to test the seafaring capabilities of some quite interesting boats, don't miss it! #CAA2026
The British Museum image shows a painted scene of a lion and a gazelle playing a board game, probably senet. They are seated on low stools, facing each other, across a low table on which a board game with black playing pieces is laid out. It is probably the popular ancient Egyptian board game senet. The gazelle sits on the left of the table facing the lion on the right. The animals are seated on their haunches, sitting upright, legs hanging down from the chair seat, and their forelegs raised, being used as arms. Each animal holds a game piece with their hoof and paw respectively. The gazelle is painted brown within a black outline. It has black hooves, two long, black, s-shaped curved horns, and a black dot for its eye. It has long pointed ears at the back of its head. The lion is painted a sandy brown within a black outline. It has a darker-brown shaggy mane and a black nose and eye. Itβs mouth is ajar as if speaking. Detail from an ancient Egyptian illustrated papyrus from Deir el-Medina

For the first time, archaeologists have analysed ash residue from incense burners preserved at Pompeii, revealing the substances burnt as offerings to the gods in Roman households and the long-distance trade undertaken to acquire them.

a digital illustration in the style of a relief print depicting a black cat in a defensive pose holding a torn and tattered transgender pride flag in its mouth as it looks directly towards the viewer. the background is purple with some specks of blue and pink showing through, and behind the cat is a black midground resembling grass or flames. the top right corner features a box with a caption reading "T.D.O.V."

Are you at #CAA2026? Wanna talk about ABM, software development, and code review for archaeology? Come find me and let's have a chat - you'll recognize me by the mustache!
Code is often not reviewed before publication and we need to do better as a field. I hope we will be able to get to a point where we treat software and code like we treat data - something that has to be made available and reviewed at the same level as we do with paper results!
Started #CAA2026 in Vienna by giving a workshop on #CodeReview and #CodingBestPractices to a group of computational archaeologists who were all very interested and keen. The theme is in itself super important since the current state of things for archaeology software is not the best.
Hey, librarian here. If you find out a favorite author is a monster, don't separate the art from the author just give it the fuck up and stop supporting the monster.

While some of the worst problems I cited above are systematic and difficult to fix, this one is easier, because light is a localized phenomenon: if you turn off one light, you have a net contribution to the decrease light pollution. Still, this requires convincing local administrations to act.
Cultures, sciences, religions, and stories - all that makes us humans - have been affected by those lights in the vast darkness. The sky is half of our sensory experience. And we will never stop yearning for it. Let's take back our night skies!
While climate collapse or war seem to be the greatest problems of our time, the loss of darkness is a subtle yet consequential issue. By losing our access to the starry skies, we are losing a piece of Us that has been with us since forever.

The 2026 International RSE Survey is now live!
This survey will help us better understand what RSEs need and how we can advocate for the community with policymakers and funders.
We'd really appreciate your input. Please share with your networks. #RSEng
