The New Twin Fossil Shock | Ember How the energy crises of the 2020s speed up the electric age

"In power, solar plus storage now costs below $60 per megawatt hour (MWh) at a global level. The variable cost of LNG-fired power in Asia, at $20 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), exceeds $160 per MWh – nearly three times the cost of never needing fuel again."

Any questions?

The Iran war is driving a solar boom in the UK.

@octopus.energy reports solar sales up 54% in March alone.

EDF says residential sales are running at double last spring's rate.

Every rooftop solar installation is a vote against fossil fuel price volatility.

It is really, really good to see that there are still shareholders out there who are willing to ask some hard questions about why tech companies like Google are deciding that hurting society through fossil fuel use is an acceptable cost of AI expansion

U.S. Biofuels Target Could Fuel Destruction of Tropical Rainforests This article was originally published by Inside Climate News and is reproduced here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.

The U.S. doesn’t produce enough vegetable oil to meet a new biofuels mandate, so suppliers will have to ramp up imports of vegetable oil, putting pressure on tropical forests overseas. via @insideclimatenews.org

Why do we live in such a childish, stupid country? A country that wastes its money on useless billion dollar aircraft carriers, when it could be spending those tax dollars to actually help its citizens like sane countries.

How many times have you heard US fossil fuel supporters say,

"Why should we lower our emissions when China is not?"

Meanwhile:

"Decline of emissions from China's power sector was
offset by an increase in U.S. power sector emissions, according to the announcement."

Spain could be the only EU country to beat energy price hikes Spain spent the last six years investing heavily in wind and solar energy, leading to some of the cheapest power prices in Europe.

Not Farage Oil

Since 2019, Spain has doubled its wind and solar capacity, adding over 40 GW - more than any other EU country except Germany, whose power market is twice the size of Spain’s.

China's electrification bet is paying off. Electricity now accounts for 30% of its energy consumption - around 50% higher than the US or Europe.

With 1/3 of global renewable energy capacity already installed, China is structurally more insulated from rising oil prices than most Western economies.

Mass. governor orders state to pursue 15 GW of resources, including storage, VPPs The executive order also calls for a review of existing gas and oil storage capacity and utilization, including how the Everett LNG import terminal helps meet the region’s energy needs.

This is the right approach to tackling energy affordability in New England. Focus on low-cost solar, energy storage, and demand side management:

What the EU can — and can’t — learn from Spain’s low energy bills Madrid says a renewables boom is shielding its citizens from soaring fossil fuel costs. But that’s not the full story.

Gas only sets Spain's electricity price 15% of the time. When gas costs spike it barely registers on the electricity bill. In countries like Italy and the UK gas sets the price 90% of the time. The difference is enormous.

I spoke to @politico.com about this.

American tech oligarchs spend billions fighting socialism, yet their unhinged greed is the single best advertisement for it.

By hoarding wealth and breaking society to enrich themselves, they actively fuel the very ideology they claim to despise

If we made the green energy transition this war would be unthinkable and these authoritarians wouldn’t be in power — not in the US, not in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia, not in Russia. Hydrocarbons are killing our freedom and just plain killing us.

There seems to be a thread with large gatherings that bring short term quick money but also leave detrimental environmental impacts. When infrastructure gets built to for a one-off event, long term needs of the local communities are often ignored.

You know who really has a good vantage on what universities can and should be? Faculty. Not always the organizational structure and operation, because that's not the job, But what it takes to educate? Yep. Yet the overwhelming media coverage is by and about ppl w very little to no experience.

This is why electrification means more energy security:

In 2024, ~81% of EU electricity came from locally sourced fuels (57% excluding nuclear). Just 19% relied on imported fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are mostly imported.

Batteries are the fossil fuel killer.

Much of the main stream analysis about the energy transition is still pretending this didn't happen in the past two years.

But it did.

Incredible self own for the US. The damage being done to the US scientific enterprise is generational. We will look back on this as a tipping point where the US chose all on its own to stop leading the world in science.
