An orange Bullitt loaded up with a cooler, a tent, two boxes, a delivery bag, and two balance bikes
A red Bullitt with a box filled with a cooler, a tent, a delivery bag, and a child's bike, with two boxes on the rear rack

Two girls in the front of a cargo bike looking at a bench that reads, "Please don't blow up our library again"
A cargo bike parked next to a coffee truck in the Roy's parking lot, with a nice patio with seating
Day 19 of #30DaysofBiking - visited the main library and then stopped by Roy's for a few groceries on the way back

50 Reasons Why Everyone Should Want More Walkable Streets
From making you live longer to making cities more resilient: If you want a reason to make your city more walkable, it's in here.
“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #UrbanTruth in @fastcompany.com

How to tell when zoning is *not* a binding constraint: when you upzone one more parcel, its land value stays the same (ie. 'land lift' =0).
So if upzoning a parcel does increase its land value, then you know zoning is a constraint on housing supply.

I’m looking at you Santa Cruz Metro. I too like a free bus ride… but I like a useful, frequent route more!

It wasn't until my late 30s that I realized we don't have to follow the boring, textbook "adult" progression of driving everywhere.
Discovering e-cargo bikes reconnected me with the youthful joy of riding. It puts actual fun back into the mundane reality of day-to-day mobility.

Love riding through this street in my neighbourhood. Filtered to prevent rat-running and a beautiful canopy of leaves to provide shade in summer. Trees are also on the street and not the footpath. Sometimes we get it right.

“Every $1,300 New York City invested in building bike lanes in 2015 provided benefits equivalent to one additional year of life at full health over the lifetime of all city residents, according to a new economic assessment.”
That’s a better return on investment than some direct health treatments…”

Parking mandates add $34k per spot to housing costs, taxing carless renters and paving over natural beauty.
States should cap these rigid rules, prioritizing people over pavement to cut rents, reduce toxic runoff, and build more walkable communities.

I'm not a fan of 'go touch grass' because I think people should remove grass from most places and replace it with native flora, but 'go touch natives' definitely gives the wrong impression. 😔

How many elders have died prematurely because they weren't willing to risk killing someone with their car and didn't have other transportation options?
It's more than zero.

We've left many elders with two options:
- drive
- never leave the house alone
Elders deserve better.
They deserve to get groceries, visit friends, and go to the movies by themselves if they want without taking the very real chance they kill someone.

A photograph of a beautiful spring day with full sun. An ebike is parked in front of three benches looking out over a blue sky and green canyon that is mostly out of frame. The bike has a backpack in the front basket from earlier errands.
Getting around by bike means I can dart onto unknown streets and discover a new miniature park, no big deal. 🏞️

If developers always build up to the maximum (density, height, etc.) that’s allowed in your city, that’s a sign that your zoning rules are substantially restricting housing supply.

There's no rule saying you can't continue to seek child-like joy as you get older. There's a bike for every need, ability, and stage of life. How you move through the world should be your choice, and your city should give you the infrastructure to make it happen.
