What's annoying? Him getting knocked down a hill? Being the only polite one to the hitchhiker? Getting upset by being cut with an old razor? (and doesn't even freak out as much as the others) Being sad that his jerk friends leave him out of the whole destination of their trip?
Justice for Franklin.

Franklin (played by Paul Alan Partain) in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974)
White man with dark hair and thick dark eyebrows wearing a blue button up shirt. Unseen element, he is in a wheelchair.

Was genuinely shocked to discover that a lot of folks think that Franklin in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is annoying.

Second time watching the film, and he's the least annoying of the crew and the only memorable man in the van; honestly, main hero vibes.

Right! Sometimes the story is good and you liked it, but you were VERY into a single subplot the author never gave a ton of time to

A thing to understand about me is that I am very happy being left by myself for hours on end and often prefer it that way. So if I have chosen to interact with you or respond in any way shape or form it really is because I genuinely value you enough to do so.

so: if a cane is like "well i can hobble around without tipping over, but it's Really Unpleasant," then you probably actually need a rollator or a chair, not a cane!

and "this is about empowering you to Do Stuff and Function Better, it is not a virtue to get by on the fewest disability tools/accommodations you possibly can and shrink your life and interests accordingly"

at the time i felt guilty about using a cane; i was like, "well i only want it maybe one third to half the time, and most of those times i *can* technically walk unassisted, it's just a lot of work and feels Terrible" & it really fixed something in my brain to hear "walking should not feel that bad"

the most helpful thing i ever heard about mobility aids is, if at all possible, you should use the mobility aid(s) that make(s) it *easy* for you to do stuff, not the one(s) where it's like, "well, i can get by with some effort and pain like this"

they're public domain characters so i didn't have to change/play coy about the names or nothin'

i said this in a weirdly cagey way for someone who has a published story that's just "renfield wants to fuck count dracula"

Watching Vanilla Ice's very bad movie "Cool as Ice", and I misheard his lyric "Then I disappear in a puff of smoke" as "Then I disappear in a public swamp". I really like the idea of Vanilla Ice flexing that he might go missing in a bog

Do you think it would help if you got a wheelchair? Obviously you want to address your joint problems, but if you’re staying home from outings you’d like to go on primarily because you can’t take standing and walking, a chair would solve that problem

like in all 3, magic returning is partly a metaphor for accepting the weird, fundamentally non-ethical but beautiful mystery of earthly life (Piranesi sorta does this too, & Beagle's Last Unicorn: the unicorns return to *our* world, which still sorta sucks). it's epiphanic but not teleological

would love to read criticism abt the minor strain of fantasy where magic returns to the world--Mirrlees's Lud-in-the-Mist, Crowley's Little, Big, Clarke's JSaMN--esp bc they're *not* inversions of the nostalgic "magic-leaves" story, nor utopian/millennial; they end w a very ambiguous transcendence

Comic. I’m at my desk, leaning over to the doorway, saying “Hey! Foghorn! Foghorn Leghorn! Get in here!”
Foghorn Leghorn is walking past the doorway, “Boy, I tell ya, I tell ya, not so loud, boy. What, I say, I say, what d’ya want?”
Next panel, I’m gesturing to my computer. “How do I find that really good manga you recommended? It’s an anime now? I keep getting Halloween costumes.” Foghorn leans over my chair, “well, boy, I say, I say, you ain’t typin the entire title.”
Last panel, I turn around- “you said ‘witch hat.’ Foghorn gets in my face- “open your ears, boy!! ‘Witch Hat Atelier, I tell ya! I tell ya ‘Atelier,’ I tell ya’”

Right eye-fitting monocle attached to the left lapel.
Ridiculous choice.
ALSO: What is everyone's problem with the non-monster Penguin? Why does Devito's supercede the original regular person with a bird affinity?
As a monocled human person, I am drawn to the character as he appeared before Burton. I enjoy the fact that Penguin is one of Batman's non-insane villains and am constantly rebuffed for that fact.

somewhat tangential, but some of the most pleasant conversations i have with artists—frequently on encountering them and their work for the first time—start from observing how they've applied elements and principles of design to produce a given effect in their work.

New (Trans) Digital Worlds Failing To Be Born: Eden II and A/S/L A massive, ambitious graphic novel about a successful game, and a successful novel about a massive, ambitious unmade game

halschrieve.substack.com/p/new-trans-... someone else (who knows video games) should write longform about Eden II and A/S/L and the trans video game novel/comic but i wrote something to try to get other people to read and discuss these two fascinating books

Unhappy to report the phishing one is quickly becoming a real problem now. Why go to the trouble of social engineering when people will just give up their ID, financial info, biometrics, etc. to an AV portal? There's no standards so how can you differentiate a fake one from a real one?

I’m not At All exclusively or even primarily interested in strict formalist criticism, but the culture has me going “my god, we need to bring back formalism stat”

Mostly I have not been sleeping well but I'm currently really annoyed at this critical moment where biographical/historical criticism, the most boring kind of all, is ascendant
