existential question asked at the border: so, what do you do in the world of shakespeare?
i've decided that sadie sink's juliet kicks lars eidinger's hamlet off this list
i think even writing a book proposal is objectively too hard already
from OUP correspondence with the Huntington Library in 1926: 'Among scholars a great deal is done for very little reward'
just saw Icke's R&J with Sadie Sink and Noah Jupe. probably the best R&J I've seen, not perfect (what would that even mean lol), some gimmicky stuff, but in its best moments it cuts through the heavy layers of canonicity with the scalpel of language – exceptionally wielded by Sink. more tmrw maybe
The cover of a book, it reads: The Henry E. Huntington Facsimile Reprints, 1, Fulgens and Lucres, by Henry Medwall
A page in a book; it reads: Of this book 200 copies have been printed, No. 1
I bought a copy of the 1919 Huntington facsimile reprint of Fulgens and Lucres for 10 quid. They printed 200 numbered copies of this and I was shocked to discover that mine is apparently number one!!
Come hear me talk about the grammar of weather in husbandry manuals!

I have a big new essay out that argues that Erich Auerbach is the crucial figure for historicist reading in lit studies today + argues that the epistemology of such reading depends on the profoundly humanist criterion "sufficient passion" muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...

been reading a lot older things about textual editing and sure sounds like alchemy sometimes
Some academic publishing contract advice: make sure your contract specifies 1. a qualified human copyeditor will copyedit on the MS; 2. a qualified human proofreader will proofread the MS; 3. that production must have a proper system for version control (!).
i'm red-green blind, so not the best person to ask about shades of green, but the pattern looks so organic and fungal next to the more paint splatter style shirt
for some reason, i find this mouldy looking dress extremely unsettling
thank you, Greg!
The first page of a chapter in a book

once again, I think I'm grateful to have long ago memorized W. H. Auden's "The Fall of Rome"
We have been remiss, absent, and not here, but, for your belated consideration: Our last issue of 2025 was a special issue guest edited by @laurakolb.bsky.social and Jessica Rosenberg entitled "Comic Epistemologies." Go read! (And see TOC in next posts). www.journals.uchicago.edu/toc/elr/curr...
Delighted the new year brings (at last!) vol. 53 of Shakespeare Studies to the world, in all its purple-edged glory: Marlowe stars in the Forum, & the NGP, Articles & Reviews all full of wit & wisdom. Congratulations to Jim Siemon for 11 years of leadership, w/ huge gratitude for our collaboration!
Important things happening!!
