AMOC collapse is the biggest threat to Europe. Not migration, wokery or similar nonsense.

BOWEN: Well, no, because what I’m talking about there is the immediate challenge. And then there are some who say the answer to this is to somehow become more reliant on fossil fuels. That’s not a view I share. It’s not a view that any ministerial counterpart around the world I’ve spoken to shares.

We are dealing with a short-term issue, yes, of supply. There’s been a fossil fuel supply shock. This is a fossil fuel supply crisis internationally. The answer to that is sensible measures like the ones we’re undertaking, the Prime Minister’s undertaking.

And in the longer term, if you can reduce to some degree, or a greater degree, our dependence on those fossil fuels, that’s a good thing. So, for example, our EV uptake in Australia, our number of EVs in the fleet is relatively low at the moment, high in sales terms but low as a percentage of the fleet. It takes a long time. Even with the relatively low EV uptake we have, that’s avoiding the use of 15 million litres a week of fuel. That’s a good thing. That’s 15 million litres we have available for others. That’s part of it.

Now, if we have higher EV sales and higher EV penetration and higher EV percentages across the entire fleet, that figure will come down even more and provide more fuel options for those for whom an EV is not a viable option just right now.

And again, I participated yesterday in the conversation on the Prime Minister’s behalf with the Prime Ministers of Japan, Singapore, East Timor or Bangladesh, India, a whole bunch of Asian and Asian-adjacent countries yesterday. It was a very common theme from the interventions by Prime Ministers and Presidents. One, we have to work together in the short term, that was the first theme. Two, this underlines and underpins one of the reasons why we’re electrifying and trying to get more sovereign sources of renewable energy, so we are less reliant on these fragile fossil fuel supply chains.

Interesting comments from Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen this afternoon. It suggests EVs will be a focus of Australian domestic policy and stirrings of regional political realignment across South East Asia in the form of a short term plan (work together) and a long term goal (electrify).

Carbon dioxide removal is not a current climate solution — we need to change the narrative Drastically reduce emissions first, or carbon dioxide removal will be next to useless.

In recognition of us doing fuck all to reduce emissions, let me remind y'all that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is useless unless we decarbonize drastically.

Farmer braces for backlash after speaking up in support of transmission lines A farmer in Victoria's north is offering up his property for transmission lines as part of the VNI West project, saying it would give him a chance to diversify his income.

"Others didn't want it, so me and a couple of other neighbours got together and said, 'Why not bring it through our farms?'," Mr McIntosh said. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04...

Orban's Australian sycophants Australians welcoming the defeat of our nascent religious right in the May election need to pay attention to the echoes of the American right wing strategies looming ahead of their 2024 election, and the faction in Australia that shares those goals.

Orban's crushing defeat is a huge loss for Australia's authoritarian right. His fans here include Abbott, Downer, Kevin Andrews, Brian Loughnane (former Liberal party national director) and Greg Sheridan, along with less prominent but highly influential figures

People's Summit for a Fossil Free Future The People’s Summit for a Fossil Free Future is the civil society counterpart to the historic First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, taking place in Santa Marta from 24-29 April 2026.

Counting down to the first meeting of the Fossil Fuel Treaty in Santa Marta later this month. Many firsts will be discussed there, and most exciting is the Peoples Summit for a Fossil Fuel Free Future.

We urgently need to switch to renewables.

We urgently need to switch to renewables.

Now more than ever, we urgently need to switch to renewables.

This is about more than saving the planet; it's about peace and stability - renewables are cheaper and provide greater energy security.
