Dear
Andy
I warned you there was more to come. Well here's part of it!
sort out a mix-up.
time I sent you a white
copied from my Fire Family cover.
record inside was not
the Fire Family.
to put in its sleeve,
Unfortunately I don't have any details of the tracks by
now find that Amayenge.
Amayenge.
I also enclose
a batch of
45's,
most of them by Amayange.
I saw the group
live in Zambia, twice.
They are basically a six-
piece (drums,
bass,
two guitars, lead male singer & percussion)
plus two girl singers and two boy dancers.
The percussionist
joins the two boys dancers, doing what used to be called gymnastics when I was at school--flip flops.
somersaults,
cartwheels--while the band keeps up a very fast
beat
behind all
the action.
One of the boys is
about nine,
and is more or less a
contortionist, doubling over backwards until his hands are flat on the floor, and then flipping over onto his feet.
All in all, Amayenge would be an entertaining group to play
live here;
Zambia Airways
and
a firm
called
between them to pay for the group's
Zamcargo
have
agreed
flights
to London
and living
expenses while they are here.
Stuart Lyons is ready
them.
Naturally, they are itching
but
to promote
to come
it's a
bit
inefficient if there's no record out;
over,
so I have said i would
see
if I could find an interested record company.
DiscAfrique,
Globestyle, and Earthworks would seem to be the most likely, and
I am supplying them with samples.
Finally, I also enclose the notes prepared by Ben Shumba at
Teal Records, which relate to all the records he sent.
I plan to
send you the rest of the records when you've had chance to work through this batch, but if the notes make you impatient to hear a particular record, let me know and I'll send it/them.
Happy listening
Call me to fix our get together!

I’ve told this story before, but a decade or so ago I had the opportunity to buy some of Andy Kershaw’s records - though not direct from Andy, via a record dealer friend of his. Some came with little notes and letters. Precious objects.

God speed.

ha, I suppose I mean, maybe not one of the high concept, prestige ones. But the premise is indeed marvellous!

It’s obviously minor Pixar, but that’s OK, nothing wrong with a fun film about furry guys.

This story seemed to require live text updates on the BBC News website. I dunno, me neither.
