Love that my job affords me opportunity to delve into such disparate topics โ and to interact with people committed to science. If we persist, we will outlast those trying to silence us

Beautiful NPR story about recent SA tour by the UMich Symph Orchestra. It's long (45 mins) but captures the experience accurately. I am also quoted extensively at several places in ways that mostly portray me accurately. It was a moving and transformative experience to be part of this tour.
Today, I am proud both of being South African and American. There is good in both of these places, and this exemplifies the best of both. We have to engage and be together. That is how humanity moves forward. Two parts of my life coming together in the best possible way.

In our old house that had floor vents, we also had one cat who did this. It meant that his belly was nice and warm, but the house not so much. He was big enough to just about block all airflow.

Just gave a talk to home department titled: "Language, Place and Identity in Post-Colonial Societies: Three Case Studies from Afrikaans." I feel like I have come full-circle in the last third of my career. My research has taken me back to my birth country and to the complexities of S Afr society.

Lize Jansen van Rensburg Coetzee (on the right). April 17, 1968 to February 2, 2002. This was circa January 2002. I have loved deeply twice in my life โ the first time was Lize, ended by cancer. The second is Gary and that still continues. Life is complicated. People are complex. Love is love.
Just published at Studies in Second Language Acquisition: doi.org/10.1017/S027.... It's another publication from our decade-long study of the Afrikaans-Spanish bilingual community in Patagonia.
