INTERVIEW: Chris Stark (@chrisstark.bsky.social), head of UK govt's "mission" for clean power by 2030
Over 40 mins he explains why the UK shd be an "electrostate", why attacks on climate policy are "completely crazy" & why economics are driving the global energy transition “in one direction”

Read @chrisstark.bsky.social's feature article by Jonathan Leake in The Telegraph where he call calls for UK to embrace the "cold, hard economics" of going green, Chris highlights the immense economic opportunity that the renewable energy industry could bring to communities across the UK:

We’re consulting on potential reforms to the CfD for the next renewables allocation round, later this year - among them, longer contracts as we as some other new parameters.
These are some of the most important changes that we can implement for the 2030 clean power mix.

Alongside top leadership and expert engineers, they discussed steps needed for the UK's Clean Power mission. Learn more: nepc.raeng.org.uk/enabling-a-d...
Scientists developed the first climate models in the late 1960s (for which the Nobel Prize in physics was recently awarded!).
How have these models held up against what happened in the real world after they were published? Surprisingly well, it turns out:
Fankoo!
Miss you guys.
The Committee and secretariat congratulate @chrisstark.bsky.social on being awarded a CBE in the New Years Honours list. Chris oversaw the production of over 100 publications, including six UK progress reports. www.theccc.org.uk/2024/12/31/c...
Thanks Ed. So nice of you.
These last two weeks are providing a lot of reasons to talk about electricity market decarbonization and risk.
Here, the UK is setting a good example of how to accelerate decarbonization by addressing risk allocation problems that otherwise hinder renewables and energy storage investment. 🧵🔌💡
Deep dive: How the UK plans to reach clean power by 2030
With my colleague Molly I've dug deep into the govt's 136-page action plan for decarbonising the grid by 2030
If achieved, it'd see offshore wind become backbone of power sector – in just 6yrs

Huge.
What @chrisstark.bsky.social's Clean Power 2030 Action Plan gets right? ➡️ Consumers
Clean power transitions rest on consumers shifting energy choices, e.g. how & when they use electricity to match supply from renewables and to avoid overwhelming the grid⚡
📈⬇️ 2030 consumer demand flex growth
There will be a more accessible version of this (time pressures prevented us getting done on time). It’ll be on the .gov website.
Great to see this put together quickly - as is needed for a pacy switch away from gas
Government has experienced bumps and missteps in first 6 months, for sure, but plenty of serious policy activity, manifested publicly, like this. (Whether one happens to agree with it or not on specifics.)
You can probably imagine the nature of some of my recent private correspondence there.
Fascinating UK polling on clean power from @luketryl.bsky.social and @moreincommonuk.bsky.social
Maybe ‘skim’ again. Perhaps you’ll be less ‘shocked’. Control F only takes you so far.
(Top tip: you’ll get much more from social media interactions with me if you’re less aggressive.)
Thanks Jon!

Big day tomorrow. Lots for you to read. We’ve been busy.
👀
We’re building our own. But we’re using tools developed in govt.
I don’t think we have a URL. I’d like one of course.
We’ll shortly have a dashboard - and we will hopefully be able to publish live progress. So that might be the moment.
