Hugely symbolic that as crowds tear down a statue of Hafez al-Assad in a Damascus suburb, Druze flags are being proudly waved. After decades of a violent regime doing its best to fuel sectarian divisions, Syrians of all faiths are welcoming its demise.

Swaida, a city in southern Syria which is home to the Druze religious minority, are out in the thousands demonstrating their support of the Syrian rebellion against the Assad regime.

The sectarian divisions that Assad was successful in fueling amongst Syrians is falling apart.

Yesterday we gathered as a local community in Valentines Park to unveil a memorial tree to commemorate the 1984 massacre of thousands of Sikhs in India, the Sikh genocide. We shall never forget 1984.
