It’s been indeed a strange couple of days… the (near) identical messages (complete with a waving hand emoji) just keep coming in. I’m used to Instagram anno 2020 where everyone was just eager to connect and talk books, so I thought people were just feeling friendly all of a sudden…

Absolutely!

Not as such but I do trade chapters with my ideal reader on a weekly basis and regularly convene with my two writing coaches (both NYT bestselling authors) to discuss plot and character arcs so there’s definitely a bit of an agile/client focused approach to my MS development :)

I have a dual timeline component in the second act, where I switch between her reacting/surviving in one set of conditions and making more conscious, value-aligned decisions in a different, but arguably just as shitty, set of conditions.

Wonderful article! I usually have so many thoughts about writing complex protagonists (motivation vs agency etc.) but as I slide into second draft and editing mode with my trademark passive FMC, I really needed to read someone else’s informed opinion on this topic!
