How South Korea plans to use the Iran crisis to spur a renewables revolution Energy crisis unfolding in Middle East has added political urgency, and more funding, to transform the solar industry in particular

This village uses its solar income on free communal lunches, buses and other communal efforts.“If you divide money as individual income, people feel disconnected. People who didn’t know each other for years now get to know each other within days”

I love everything about this.

California was once home to the greatest diversity of Native communities in the U.S. Many are still in the Central Valley which is overrun with industrial farms. The Choinumni Tribe tends their family’s sacred burial ground in Fresno County. Read more.

Flowers of California poppy (Eschscholzia californica). Two fused sepals form a hat-like structure that has already dehisced, while four free bright orange petals adorn the blossom. Inside the flower, though not visible from this perspective, are numerous stamens arranged in several whorls and a gynoecium composed of two carpels. The gynoecium is surrounded by a floral cup forming a wide rim, which can be seen on the lower left, once all other organs have fallen off. (Image credit: Annette Becker.)

More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days. The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents.

They’ve had their necks kneeled on.

They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear.

At least three citizens were pregnant when agents detained them.

Good morning, monsters.

Fallen leaves are not only pretty, but an excellent place to hide. Or listen to sputtering rain tap on the leaves while you rest, where human concerns cannot find you.

It’s just wild to me how many iterations there are of the United States. I don’t know the place that so many people describe when they shout about saving democracy. I’ve never been there. And yet I’ve lived here all my life…

Thin White Line – Maya Pace Writer and community practitioner Maya Pace awakens to how California’s essential nature, dry, scorched, renewed by flame, has been repressed for centuries by our ideals of paradise.

“We have created a future that will ask us if we love it enough to live in it.
There is no glory. This is it. An intimacy bound, feet first, to the damp and scorched earth.”

Maya Pace on loving California (and maybe other things)

This is serious, rigorous analysis and it should change the way the media has been covering these protests. These were, in the aggregate, *massive.*

Trump Cuts Are Killing a Tiny Office That Keeps Measurements of the World Accurate A tiny but crucial agency that maintains physical coordinates like latitude and longitude in the US is struggling as the Trump administration forces out federal employees.

SCOOP from me: the mass exodus of employees from NOAA is decimating a tiny office that literally keeps our measurements of latitude and longitude accurate — and, former employees tell me, endangers the science of how the US understands global measurements:

@lailalalami.com ‘s amazing book The Dream Hotel is about the surveillance state and the commercialization of personal information, but it’s also SUCH a woman’s book. About trying so damn hard for corporeal autonomy, the loss of anything secret, the daily invasion on femininity. #booksky

Stakes The NBA playoff's rules, conditions, and contradictions of pressure.

this week's BASKETBALL FEELINGS is about the contradictions of the nba playoffs — its active language of loss, the correct amount of want vs. pressure, and the weird green frenzy of energy that spills out right now before the postseason clamps up

A trace fossil in Elgin Museum - the label says Jurassic worm burrow

Not all fossils are the bodies of animals or plants. Trace fossils like tracks & burrows preserve animal behaviour.

This beauty is on display in Elgin Museum & labelled as Jurassic worm burrow. I would use the ichnogenus Gyrochorte but maybe @ichnologist.bsky.social can advise?
