Jelieta Walinski Ph.D in Desert Bloom Observatory, Arizona, captured this stunning image of #comet C/2025 R3 in the early hours of April 15. Thank you, Jelieta!

Pretty extraordinary that the U.S. is experiencing its worst March drought on record, worse even than the Dust Bowl years of the 1930s. Drought is the most dangerous threat of climate change.

Very important reporting from Alaska. The volatile oil price situation is really, really bad for the rural villages. And the headline is not an exaggeration...

"The most dramatic and drastic climate changes we see in the last 100,000 years of Earth history have been when the Amoc switched to a different state."

It'll probably be fine though

Headline at The Guardian illustrated with an ominous looking photo of a roiling stormy seascape:
"Critical Atlantic current significantly more likely to collapse than thought"
Subheadline reads: "Scientists say finding is ‘very concerning’ as collapse would be catastrophic for Europe, Africa and the Americas"

Turns out, we *really* needed that last decade of lost climate action that Trump has wasted.

We're on track for a super El Niño this year.

That means an uptick in extreme weather patterns over the next ~18 months and a near 100% lock that 2027 will be the warmest year on record.

There was one report of softball size (4" diameter) #hail near Maple Bluff, WI Tuesday. (NE Madison metro)

Per NOAA's database, the only other occurrence of 4" hail in Dane County dating to 1950 was on July 2, 1960.

One of most damaging hail events in Madison history?

#Sinlaku is also the earliest Cat-4-or-stronger storm on record for any U.S. territory in any calendar year.

An extreme wind warning now in effect for Saipan — this is the highest-end wind alert the National Weather Service can send, basically like a stationary tornado.

Very dire situation right now in Saipan as Super Typhoon Sinlaku continues to make slow landfall.

Right now there's nothing on the front page of CNN, The Guardian, or the Washington Post about today's landfall of Super Typhoon Sinlaku in a US territory. The NY Times only has this short blurb after scrolling all the way to the very bottom of the page.

Category 4 Super Typhoon Sinlaku is making landfall now over Saipan in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Sustained winds of 150mph and 50ft waves.

Folks in Saipan are US citizens and they need our help.

Super Typhoon Sinlaku is now less than 24 hours from landfall in Saipan — a US territory and home of more than 40,000 US citizens.

Our brothers and sisters in Saipan deserve support just like any other Americans.

When Donald Trump's FEMA ignores this Category 5 landfall, there needs to be outrage.

1. Keep an eye on the local newspaper for updates
www.mvariety.com

2. Reminder that Saipan got hit HARD by a typhoon in 2019. That one (Yutu) was devastating and barely got noticed in stateside media

Only one other typhoon of Sinlaku's strength has hit the Mariana Islands in recorded history — Super Typhoon Yutu in 2018.

Yutu caused catastrophic damage across Saipan. Some parts of the island are still recovering nearly 10 years later.

Sinlaku arrives tomorrow.
