A graph showing the rise in citations for our 2023 motonormativity paper, up to 101 in total today
Given the considerable lags in the academic publishing process, I'm surprised and gratified by how rapidly motonormativity is becoming a thing in the literature
Dusk #bikepooling from a party with friends is the best way to get home, especially since my home was only about 2 mins from where I split off from the group.
I heard from a City employee here that they also send the layer to Google. They said seeing the new layer integrated can take years or longer. Faster updates is one reason to like an OSM app, like CoMaps, but their geocoder and POI database are often poor
Google is terrible. I made a few videos complaining about it for bikes, as did Not Just Bikes. The Transit app is better, if it covers your city. I’m still thinking how to get across in a video how much local knowledge you need to bike, which is a nudge not to bike
Also fuck this shit. I got yelled at by a driver to use said bike lane.
I would have, but it was blocked. The delivery men heard me say that too.
Read my lips: no new roads. We must focus on renewal this four year budget.

@skipischris.bsky.social They say it’s your birthday. Well, Happy Birthday to ya. I hope you’re going to a wild party.
If you're in Calgary and cargo bike curious, be sure to pop by our shop.

The great part of a bakfiets bike is: if it can fit in the cart, it can fit in the bike!

Highlights BICYCLE LEGISLATION noting: Highway Traffic Act, Section 162, Subsection (1): “a person operating a bicycle on a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the duties that a driver of a motor vehicle has.” Cyclists are not allowed to ride their bicycles on City sidewalks unless so designated by City Council. Remember — pedestrians always have the right-of-way over cyclists.

Class III Bike Route - signed cycling routes where cyclists share the roadway with other types of traffic. This type of bikeway does not provide cyclists with increased road privileges; rather it informs motorists of the cycling route #Yegbike
That was about my reading too. Prices rise, money comes from elsewhere in the household budget. Prices fall, people drive a bit more to use up their fuel budget
Residential street with Toronto barriers across the intersection. There is a no entry sign and obvious SUV tracks passing through the gap in the barriers
Checked out the modal filters on 124Ave. Not sure at all what they’re supposed to filter. All the drivers I watched passed through with no difficulty. #yegbike
While we await a little more clarity about these new regulations, to be enforced by Bill 28, might actually work, I thought it timely to repost my recent podcast interview with Pilar Martinez, CEO of the Edmonton Public Library, on free speech and why it matters. #abpoli #yeg #AlbertaUnbound
Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack announced that Blake Desjarlais will become his new chief of staff next week. Desjarlais was the NDP MP for Edmonton Griesbach from 2021 to 2025.

I talked with people at the City and Google is slow to respond. Google also only cares about drivers. I found island-protected, double left turn lanes marked as a bike-friendly street in Google Maps. It took them months to realize the bridge over Groat was out. I don’t recommend them for biking.
After filming that driver, I looked carefully and there was one block with missing signs so it did look like you could drive east on 114 Ave
No joke: @wesmars.bsky.social once reviewed a study that proposed getting rid of sidewalks.
Using a statistical model, the authors found that pedestrian crashes mostly happen on streets with sidewalks. Their solution: No sidewalks!
From the newest episode, out later this week
Saving money on gas starts with smarter alternatives to owning a car.
With an e-bike that can handle groceries, commutes, and school drop-offs, you can transition to a one-car family, using it for daily trips and saving thousands each year.

I was a bit mean to my city because of the bike lanes they built last summer. So, here's what I would build instead.

I have an UA and have a GSD on order. The GSD is mostly for my wife and daughters. I’m sure it’s normal and necessary to have both a bakfiets and longtail cargo bike. N+1
No they are not. I haven’t considered if that’s possible
I am tired of people defending car dependency by using people with disabilities and older adults as cudgels. It is empirically and morally wrong.
Today's the day! 2:00pm at City Hall. Come see what young geographers and planners are thinking about #yeg. 16 great GIS student posters for you to enjoy.

Edmonton is removing all scramble crosswalks from Whyte Ave.
These intersections, where all pedestrians cross at once without vehicles were designed to make our busiest pedestrian streets safer.
The city is using transit as an excuse to remove them, and make it faster for cars.
People who hit (or almost hit) you with their car really don’t like when you hit their car back.
I spoke to @carterlavin.bsky.social about some of the most common mistakes people made when advocating for better transportation in our cities

Interesting experiment on morning ireland with a bike, bus and car commute. The bike was quickest. But what it doesn’t mention is that the bike travel time is also predictable. The same car and bus journeys tomorrow could be a little better or a lot worse. #SpeirGorm www.rte.ie/news/2026/03...
Yes, afaik. I hope lots of public comes out
