Two kids heading counterclockwise on the green lake outer cycle track. One is older and cycling confidently, and one is younger and weaving left and right a bit with only one foot on a pedal as the other foot kicks off the ground. Paint and flex posts delineate the car lanes from the bike lanes, and one of the flex posts has been mowed down by a car. It's a perfect partly cloudy Seattle spring evening.
Homeward bound after a lovely evening at Green Lake
Nothing but a flex post and a prayer between my entire world and vehicle traffic
The 3yo is so close to properly pedaling!
(She switched to one of our bikes once we got to roads and hills, but the 8yo held her own all the way home to Ballard.)

I do even have empathy! But we just don't need to put that above literally trying to stop sacrificing children

We had good circulation of the info in local parent groups, and that really helped boost the turnout. But it could also be just a bigger city with more people to draw on.

This is a hard truth: driving responsibly is way harder and involves way more effort than driving correctly. You can follow all the rules and still kill someone with your car. If you don't want to do that, it takes a lot of extra work: avoiding driving where possible, recognizing bad design, etc.

When people (drivers) are upset about distracted pedestrians, what they really mean is: I don't want the responsibility of driving my car with awareness and care, as if it might kill someone

"They were so lucky I was looking"
Ummm no. Stopping in time for a child running onto the street is not heroic/lucky, it is your goddamn obligation as a driver. Cost of entry. Kids are allowed to be unpredictable, you are not.

I'm really just fed up lately that lots of otherwise progressive people have decided traffic violence is an issue that we simply cannot address. How can people claim to care about equity and ignore the toll of car dependency?

We intentionally kept it very casual! We contacted a couple of bike shops who brought some of their bikes for test rides, got some maps from the city, and brought some activities for kids. The rest was just show up and have a good time!

Shawn Micallef: Toronto’s main drag is a real drag. So why is the Yonge Street redesign taking the slow road?
The sluggish pace of the transformation Toronto’s most famous street is in sharp contrast to how quickly Church Street is set to become pedestrianized.
In the @thestar.com I write about how Toronto lags behind other cities & the dismal watering down of yongeTOmorrow. A big chance to catch do something really great, yet thwarted by status quo inertia. There’s hope w the Church St pedestrian plan but both need your vocal support. Read & share. 💪

Totally! The options are overwhelming. Test riding a few different styles is what helped me decide, but it can be hard when bike shops only sell a handful of types.

An Urban Arrow and Tern GSD with an easel and a large child's bike in them, respectively
Staff from Urbane Cyclist with three cargo bikes, one of them pulling a trailer with two more cargo bikes on it
Of course, the organizers and the bike shop brought their supplies (and bikes!) by cargo bike!

A map of east Toronto that says "where do you love to ride your bike? Where do you wish you could ride your bike?" with post-it notes stuck on it
It's so nice to hang out with people who all want the same thing - sustainable, affordable, and fun mobility options.

A person smiling and waving while trying an Urban Arrow with her child
Cargo bikes spread out on the grass at the park
A person test-riding a long tail cargo bike with their child
Four kids having a ride in a Madsen cargo bike
Today's cargo bike test ride is party was my favourite kind of event. So many big smiles and happy people riding bikes. I heard from people who left the event much closer to getting a cargo bike, and people who felt less weird or alone in their choice to bike with kids.

A person trying an Urban Arrow cargo bike with many other people and cargo bikes in the background
I have more to say about our cargo bike test ride event but one thing for sure is that a bike/e-bike/cargo bike subsidy program here would be VERY popular

One of the reasons people love the Toronto Islands is because there are no cars are allowed there.

I was walking through the west end of Vancouver the other day, “Canada’s densest neighbourhood”, and that is also what struck me, it is very quiet. You can hear birds chirping, children playing, wind rustling tree branches. We don’t really appreciate how much peace cars cost us

I always think about the filth part when I go down to the ravine in the winter, where despite extremely heavy foot traffic the snow is always white!

Exactly, you hardly ever see conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians because there's just so much space.

Ave Mont-Royal in Montreal in 2023, with people walking to work and kids out. A McDonalds truck is making a delivery.
Ave Mont-Royal in the evening, full of people walking and biking or lounging on street furniture
A semi-permanent pedestrian street at 8 am and 8 pm, full of life.
8 am: kids going to school and daycare, people walking to work, a truck making a delivery.
8 pm: people sitting, relaxing, walking dogs, heading to restaurants, walking with friends, shopping.

Yes! I love European recipes for this. After I make a recipe I sometimes write down the weights I used for next time.

What you can't see in the pictures of pedestrian streets: the QUIET. Hundreds of people out, and all you hear are birds singing, the click of a bike mechanism, and the murmer of conversation.

When a recipe calls for a clove of garlic, I imagine the biggest clove of garlic I've ever seen, then add normal-sized cloves until they add up to that.
