a friend once described it as akin to being at war, without the violence, you spend interminable amounts of time digging trenches with only fleeting moments of Excitement...

Questions we will never know the answer to....

I wonder how far back you would have to go to find the first "musician" who relied on his entertainment value to provide a living..?

Ummm, you do realise that most of the people promoting the war are "incels"? (involuntarily celibate)
It's why they are doing it.

This is a bit silly to me, all the lefties who are on your side are "getting some" and you want to punish us peace loving people by taking our sex off us.

Seriously?

I reckon I could take a good guess at what happened, and it would be pretty horrific.

And I would love to think that there was some sort of social conscience happening, and a central food storage can unsure your entire population survives.

But in all honesty, i think I might be in an "airy fairy rainbows and lollipops" territory thinking that was the norm...

Oh man, I cannot even begin to fathom a life where a bad season is the difference between life and death...
I realise hill forts developed over time for a myriad of reasons, but somehow, just maybe protecting your winters food from theft might, just might just be one of the reasons? ๐Ÿค”

Citizen scientist, and I bow to your greater knowledge.
And I am hoping you can supply me with some scientifically valid reading on this matter that you may have possible knowledge of.

Like I said earlier, I am sorta down a "rabbit hole" chasing reputable accepted information.

Durotriges, can I please be so bold as to PM you? ๐Ÿค”
I have fallen down a "rabbit hole" about these Iron Age Constructions and the beginning of some of the constructions extending back into the late Bronze age.
Investigating these forts origins and any relationship with stock grazing Vs. cropping.

I am so fascinated by this...

I just keep asking myself why, just why did they do it.
And there are so many answers as to why, all very good reasons, I really think there is no one single reason, but somehow, just somehow, safety in numbers might of had a part to play.

Dunno, your first guess at Old Winchester hill looked good.

I reckon I have found the spot pictured from the plane.

Interesting set of earthworks in the nature Reserve to the North East of Old Winchester hill.
Really shows out on the LiDAR.

If all the dating is correct... wow, just wow.
Novice here but, I always assumed the "Iron Age" is roughly recognised as from 1200 BC or so onwards.

Raises one giant question in my mind, did Iron working begin in Africa? And did the tech driving it "travel" out of Africa on the backs of traders?
