Let's all assume this was one of the most insightful commentaries I have ever provided.

Several times over the past 40 years, survey researchers have asked:

If the federal government says there is a national emergency, and a majority in Parliament agrees, is it all right or not to suspend the usual civil rights?

How do Canadians answer? Find out:

Despite the Conservative Party’s current focus on law and order, its supporters are more likely than supporters of the other federal parties to oppose the idea that national security should trump civil liberties.

Should we suspend civil rights during a national emergency? Whose rights? Which emergency?

To what extent do Canadians support the suspension of civil liberties in response to a national emergency?

Possible my most niche post ever, though the "Habermas on Millennium low income bursaries" one is a close 2nd.

This overlap in strategies suddenly occurred to me while listening to the post-game interviews last night. Seems important.

Are young adults becoming more religious? Why I am suddenly (somewhat) less skeptical

Funny you should mention that...

Interesting thesis! And yet the finding applies to other questions about gender roles (not just political leadership).

Thesis: Survey results reflect the fact that the older you get the more time you've had to see male leaders in action.

2) Among men age 18 to 34, the proportion saying that religion is very or somewhat important in their life rose by 21 percentage points between 2017 and 2025; this is matched by a 19-point jump among women. That’s a significant change.

Interested in what's going on with young people today?

1) Younger people are more likely than their older counterparts to agree with patriarchal statements, such as: men are better political leaders than women. www.environicsinstitute.org/projects/pro...

Fascinating. Can you break it down by religion? I agree it can't all be down to recent immigration, but I wonder if there's also a second gen effect. I'd also be fascinated to see if attendance tracks importance.

There is a partial second gen effect for sure. Basically everyone is more religious than White non-immigrants (CES data, zero is White non-immigrants).

Also very possible there is a "religion vibes" change among young men though, would be really interesting to see.

Not in this survey, unfortunately. But stay tuned for more... we are in the field in Toronto with a survey with quesitons on religious affiliation and attendance (as well asking about immigration background and racial identity).

In both Canada & the U.S., younger people are more likely to agree that men are better political leaders than women - a finding that goes against the expectation that support for equality is typically stronger among younger generations.

I’ve been skeptical about claims that young people are returning to religion. But, after this topic came up in conversation again the other day, I decided it was time to check our data.

But the gap in opinions between supporters of the two main political parties is much larger in the U.S. than it is in Canada.

Why Alberta and Quebec diverge on judicial appointments Alberta and Quebec both want a role in judicial appointments. But their arguments reveal sharply different visions of federalism.

As usual, there's a Policy Options article!

Will this lead to concerted action, or is it mere gesture? As colleague Charles Breton sayas, Quebec's plan of attack on the file is quite different than Alberta's. 2/2
