We show for the first time that a high-fiber diet is a low-risk intervention that may delay progression to myeloma. This project is truly team science and an amazing collaborative effort that spans multiple institutions, 3 countries and 7 years. #ASH25 #mmsm

Findings were translated to Vk*MYC mice modeling the MM-precursor state by Laura Cogrossi and Matteo Bellone in which a high-fiber diet delayed progression through improved metabolism, microbiome and SCFA production that reinvigorated anti-tumor immunity and inhibited tumor growth #mmsm

Consumption of a western diet and high BMI are risk factors for progression from pre-malignant phenotypes to cancer MM. In the NUTRIVENTION trial (NCT04920084), we administered a high-fiber, plant-based diet to 23 pts with MM precursor states and elevated BMI. #mmsm #ASH25

As a Hodgkin lymphoma survivor and an oncologist, Iโ€™ve found that โ€œWhat should I eat?โ€ is one of the most common Qs patients with cancer ask - yet often the hardest one to answer. This Q stayed with me, and in 2019 it sparked a deeper curiosity that led to the NUTRIVENTION Trials

Drugs such as GLP-1RAs and lifestyle strategies such as fiber rich diets highlight potential strategies for MM risk reduction to reduce the significant financial, emotional, and social burden of this diagnosis.

MM is almost twice as common in NHBs although we find that only an additional 2-4% of MM cases in NHB are due to excess BMI compared to NHWs.

While the etiology of MM is multifactorial, we estimate the proportion of myeloma cases attributable to elevated BMI or DM overall and by race. About 11-17% of MM cases may be attributable to excess BMI and 1.2% cases to DM.
