This take has layers now
It’s a real sticky wicket for you, buddy. The answer is lie, to everyone.
Heck of an ASC election lineup!
(Obviously advisor and spouse on different lines makes it easy for me but every year I do enjoy imagining which pairings result in dream teams, revolutions, or light admin coups.)
I created a brief spreadsheet of reductions I've heard of so far. Any additions you know of (especially if you have the links/receipts) would be great: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Nancy La Vigne, a renowned criminal justice researcher and former leader in the U.S. Department of Justice under President Biden, has been named Dean of the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice. Read more at go.rutgers.edu/zmmblbo0.
We all want our non-academic family and friends to show some interest in our work, not refer to us as having summers off or lecture us about our areas of expertise, etc but I’ve made my peace with it.
I did not see “what’s your h index?” coming.
This is worse.
I’m excited to screw up three versions in one day haha, will need to work up to being crafty you :-)
Feels like Vaseline is a solution? Heals the burn and gets under the paint?
(Today in extremely Sara things I am remaking my grandmothers holiday dressing three different ways because her recipe from the great beyond is unclear, an experiment was in order, & bob and I screw it up every year.)
Officially the parent of an adult today. She promises to always vote, is kind to others, and has known the difference between prison and jail since 5th grade.
Bureaucracy. Is it possible we just insist on misspelling things we don’t like?
I’ve decided we need to start over with season 1 and binge it. I’m SO confused.
How aren’t you?!? I guess I assumed it was an ASC membership list purchase.
Yeeeeesssss 😂 (but do it like Wednesday next week when people think the nightmare is over)
“Please keep me subscribed!” “Send greetings about how you’re looking forward to seeing everyone in Philly!”
When you finally find yourself in a reply all-unsubscribe loop (current count=380 emails), you learn who you are:
My partner and I learned tonight that we are people who troll our friends for trying to unsubscribe & come up with plans to get it going again once it seems like it’s calmed down.
Seriously! Big fan of snow too 👀
Started the day with an indicted Senator and ended it with a no confidence vote in my university president.
This year’s transition from beach to work has left a lot to be desired.
If you wanted to read my story about men who play D&D on Texas death row, but stumbled on the NYT paywall -- here's a free version, on The Marshall Project - with even more photos and illustrations www.themarshallproject.org/2023/08/31/d...
I don’t know about you all but I am really enjoying the long essays on materialism versus dualism in response to discussion board questions like “can you think of another example of selective observation?”
Mine too so I bought a portable hand steamer and then declined to describe how it worked just to mess with her
We need to align the starts and stops of school to agree on when summer is over.
By this I mean your email on August 18th when I am at the beach finds me about as well as my email on December 18th when I am still grading would find you.
Don’t even get me started on the showering at someone’s house when you’ve spent a grand total of 14 minutes together (10 of which were conflictual) 😂
This has bothered me for years and I think I learned I was a social scientist when I watched it with my family and insisted we discuss what IRL reactions would be to this weirdness
Breaking out my favorite City shirt (Kompany).
Not sure if this makes me like the guy on Lasso with the half City-half United scarf.
Fwiw, my take is that this is why one should not try to explain the rise of mass incarceration/criminalization by starting in the late 1970s, focus more on function rather than form, etc but these trends have me intellectually excited insofar as I don’t have a clear take yet.
Appreciating recent work on cohort diffs on risk of crime and punishment. As examples & send me more:

Worst first skeet (?) ever but my main problem this week is that our daughter won’t go see Barbie with us because she’s going with her all friends in matching outfits and our offer to pay for all of them and dress up still won’t get us in.
We’d been led to believe we were the cool parents.
