I'm very sorry to hear this. It's sadly very similar to the situation in the UK.

This is rhetorical. He ran on a banner of being 'forensic' 'detail oriented' and focused on 'service'. Having so effectively drawn out the hypocrisy of Johnson over partygate, he is perhaps more harmed than anyone else by this kind of clandestine disregard for probity.
I wonder if being without a leader would be better or worse for Labour heading into the local elections which are now less than 3 weeks away with Starmer still in post...
Great to write with @raawiyah.bsky.social and Calogero Giametta on the realities of LGBTIQA+ asylum following the BBC's deeply misleading and harmful reporting last week.

“Rather than leading to better decision-making by the Home Office, panic over fake claimants could create a harsher atmosphere where those with well-founded fear of persecution may find it even harder to be protected.”
Seeking asylum is physically and emotionally demanding. We must make it easier.

An absolute pleasure for @oxfordgreenparty.bsky.social to host @carladenyer.bsky.social yesterday for our action day. An amazing turnout for some important conversations ahead of elections on May 7th.
Particularly glad to visit the Ultimate Picture Palace and support their campaign to Save the UPP

Thanks to @left-foot-forward.bsky.social for this chance to respond to the BBC's deeply flawed 'investigation' into the UK asylum system.

We stand united with over 100 organisations: Instead of investigations that contribute to division, we call for responsible reporting that sheds a light on systemic injustices and highlights the voices of those most affected by them.

End of week reminder for all of the migration and asylum colleagues, but particularly those working on LGBTIQA+ migration and asylum, to try and rest this weekend. It's been a very frustrating and exhausting week.
Powerful joint statement from over 100 organisations regarding the BBC's atrocious and misleading asylum reporting this week.

Lately, my life seems to be assuming everything will calm down in a week or two and then realising that it is even more busy than it was before
The only thing you can trust Labour to do is lie. They told you they were a government of change, they lied. They told you Gorton and Denton was between them and Reform, they lied. They told you they would bring back a sense of public service and end the rolling scandals, they lied.
Vote Green.
Shabana Mahmood came out to talk about 'sham lawyers'. I agree the BBC should not have conflated them. But they did. It is good to see a clear response outlining what drives people into the situations where these kinds of advisors (which is what the BBC documented) can exploit people.
So much money and time could be saved. You vet, then you appoint. It really is very simple.
This is the epitome of calling an enquiry so you can say you are having an enquiry. Very convenient for ministers to not 'pre-empt the findings of the enquiry' for the coming months when pressed on this.
I will assume you have not actually read it...
Some really really important work here in response to the BBC's "investigation" into the asylum system this week.

'While the BBC gives the impression that LGBTIQA+ claims are a loophole in the UK asylum system that is widely exploited, the reality is that of all asylum claims made in 2023 only 2% included reference to sexual orientation', writes @apowelllaw.bsky.social
call me radical but I simply believe that the leader of this country should know things
The Prime Minister sets the culture. If he was not told, then he has failed to set an appropriate culture in his government and should resign.
If he was told, then he has lied to parliament and should resign.
Either way and by every metric, this is a resignation matter.
You know what's really helpful during an affordability crisis? The government pissing hundreds of millions up the wall into a market bubble for a technology which, so far as I can see, serves to actively make every service it touches more shit.

Had a lovely time presenting my research on how HIV positive people are represented by media then sitting down to discuss with @matthewhodson.bsky.social for the @thinkhumanfest.bsky.social. Managed to be a very flawed *human* by tripping over and unplugging the clearly marked projector wire twice!!
Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the asylum system "must be totally overhauled" so only those facing real personal persecution are granted asylum. Liberal Democrat immigration and asylum spokesman Will Forster said the BBC's findings were "abhorrent", adding: "We need an asylum system that is fair, controlled and efficient. Not the shambles the Conservatives left us with." Reform UK said that if the party wins power it would make facilitating a false asylum claim a "strict liability" criminal offence, meaning there would be no requirement to prove intent in prosecutions, which would be punishable by up to two years in jail. (Highlighted bit) However, the Green Party said the BBC's reporting "gives an entirely false impression of a system which is, in reality, stacked against people seeking asylum" and heightened "the hostile environment" facing this group.
Rarely prouder to be a Green
Bravo BBC; Bravo
List of anti-migrant articles on BBC News page
Ffs. This is at the bottom of another article and does not include today's DV one so there are at least seven anti-migrant articles on BBC News within the last day
Think I actually am going to need to sit down, wade through the muck and do some writing about this....
The BBC story is definitely hand in glove with the government, Chris Mason's piece basically invites the next government crackdown. And I know this sounds conspiratorial, but he kind of let it slip.
Kier Starmer, the Labour party, and the national broadcaster are all acting as useful idiots to shepherd the far-right into number 10.
This BBC immigration and asylum story is a moral panic. Poorly evidenced, generalised panic about a marginalised social group. Next week, the government will respond with a new 'crackdown'. This will then further exacerbate public anxiety.
You know who wins from all of this, Nigel Farage.
