#JamesBarryDiary 18/4/1876 A moderately fine day indeed, sunny the most of the time. Jordan sawing in the day time and Henry in the night time. I did nothing about the mill to day, but was in the little shop and Blacksmiths shop all day, making ornaments for Bookbinding and some other nicknacks.
the first rain
in days and
the green outside
is so green
and blithe
that the eyes
can't hold it;
a poem tries
It's nest building time for some songbirds already! This morning I spotted this female American Robin with a beakful of nesting material.
it's window-up season
and my ears
are my eyes
and my heart
is happy
Close-up of a white dogwood blossom, blurred around the edges, like a bride through dream eyes
every time I step
outside in spring
I breathe and fall
in love

The Queen of the Boardwalk, a Northern Cardinal, is busy working on her nest!
This second edition is essential reading - for everyone. If there’s one book I’d recommend in environmental history, it might be this.

A male Downy Woodpecker snags a tasty grub from a cattail after hammering away at the husk. The Downy's small size allows them to perch on cattails which cannot support heavier woodpeckers.
A Black-capped Chickadee on full alert for peanuts (the Chickadee was offered one right after this photo.)
