Or prevents you from developing in the first place if you use it to avoid the hard work of developing skills
Senator Slotkin says new NSPM-7 Joint Mission Center likely includes CIA and NSA, for "looking at...people who may just take a very different view on the world than the president."
Good time to abolish DHS. An agency that never should've been created is now an unmitigated disaster

I say this as someone who finds ASC to be a consistently better conference & association & is now more comfortable identifying as a Marxist & abolitionist than a sociologist
I agree abt the doom spiral. I also think sociology it's self is in long term crisis & its better to create new spaces to do intellectuwl than to try to save professional org of a discipline that's also in a doom spiral
The “Calvin’s dad explains two types” meme, inspired by a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. Clockwise from top left: 1) Calvin’s dad walks into frame to find Calvin trying to operate a record player. The dad says: “There are only two industries left in America: gambling, and fraud.” 2) The dad shows where the record goes, and how to turn on the player, while Calvin watches. Dad says “Derivatives? Gambling. AI? Fraud. Video games? Gambling. Social media? Fraud.” Calvin says “yeah”. 3) With one hand open palm up, Calvin’s dad cheerfully explains to Calvin out of frame below him, “The stock market looks like gambling, but it’s actually fraud.” 4) In bed in a dark room, Calvin clutches at his pillow, eyes wide in existential terror. There is no text in the panel.
Thank you! I'm bummed Cedric did not respond directly to my very pointed comments on Boggs & Cox. I'll have to follow up with him next time I'm in Chicago!
We need to teach about the Civil Rights Movement more and in more detail. One reason is to get people out of the idea that the goal of civil disobedience is martyrdom. It's quite the opposite.
"...there is something irreducibly radical about BLM...If abolition begins where security ends, then the vision for black lives—like communism itself—remains a call to reclaim the commons."

Graph showing rapid increase in child detention, starting shortly after Trump takes office.
ICE has detained 6,200 children in Trump's 2nd term. The average daily population dropped in recent months. But it's hard to know if it's a longterm trend.
But, worth noting: Trump's new budget request, asks for 30,000 family detention beds.

"“Surveillance is the tip of the policing knife. ALPRs and Flock are used to facilitate mass deportations. They are used to criminalize sex workers and expand the presumption of guilt.”
I am not invested in the left as a briar patch of subcultures. I am invested in the left as an ecosystem of political projects, many of which have overlapping interests and concerns. These approaches are not interchangeable and are sometimes diametrically opposed.

Every day has made it more apparent: #disruptj20 was right in standing up against fascism and we didn’t go hard enough. unicornriot.ninja/2017/no-peac...
We did it!
People in this country go about our daily lives as our government commits atrocity after atrocity. I don’t have words for it.
In our latest, Mariame Kaba @prisonculture.bsky.social & Andrea Ritchie @dreanyc123.bsky.social on how to understand the spectacular violence of Trump’s ICE surges as an extension of the violence of everyday policing, and why to abolish ICE we must abolish the police

screen shot of text with some text underlined in red that reads: "Fascism attempts to organize the newly created proletarian masses without affecting the property structure which the masses strive to eliminate. Fascism sees its salvation in giving these masses not their right, but instead a chance to express themselves"

Over three people a day.
Day after day.
Year after year.
I watched last night and these are three of the smartest people on the planet from whom I have learned a lot. If you listen, you'll learn too.
I wonder if people are paying attention to how much their doom scrolling is cutting into time they used to use to read books
Concentration camps: stories of as many as 50 people to a cell — men and women in some cases — with no windows and limited airflow, a single camera-monitored toilet, aluminum blankets, no showers and poor quality food.
Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich
