Truly grateful by the interest our presentation on stealth journal takeovers generated at the STI in Bristol last week. Thanks to everyone who approached me to discuss it during the conference! @stienid2025.bsky.social read the whole story at zenodo.org/records/1476... and zenodo.org/records/1521...

First conference in my PhD life was @stienid2025.bsky.social ! With my supervisors, @willemhalffman.bsky.social and Serge, we looked at the behaviour of journal peer reviewers under the practice of open science. #STIENID2025
Today, I presented retractbase.csic.es, our open database about retractions, in Bristol STI-ENID Conference. @stienid2025.bsky.social with a very good reception
The panel was fun, the audience seemed to like it and I got to say some controversial things about peer review as the last word π

Day 3 with Prof Thed. Van Leeuwen looking back on the history of research metric development and use to look forward to what might happen in the field
"Peer review is built, fundamentally, on trust and routine. As an institution, peer review calls into being a horizontal community of inquiry. The system is flawed in too many ways to list, and subject to all kinds of abuse, but β ideally β itβs quite astonishing."

Everyone joining in with the βWe need a Tiger Impact Factoryβ with The Bristol Improv Theatre turning the conference themes into a musical performance. #STIENID2025
Really enjoying this case study about Mauritius - I often talk about how our current scholarly communications landscape doesn't support vital local research. This is a great example showing that.

Day 2 of #StiEnid2025 - from the In-Forest colleagues presented by Shizuku Sunagawa, an excellent paper that seeks to address the persistent disconnect between quanti & quali research with a mixed-method study examining inequalities in scientific publishing on forest governance research
This is all Prof Mike Thelwall from @sheffielduni.bsky.social - really great talk. I'll be looking up his work.

Having a wonderful time at #STIENID2025! Thank you to everyone that came to see my poster, I got some great feedback! I canβt wait to see what today and tomorrow bring!
PD: Bristol is amazingπ³
Can LLMs identify a fake article about squirrels doing surgery and writing articles about it?
Not most of them, although GPT o3 says its satirical. Most still assesses it as if it's a real article.
Gemini gave it 3* and said it had also been studied in Maths.

Not good enough for individual judgement. Don't use for peer review!
You can use it alongside your own judgement for large assessment exercises.

Starting this morning with the 2025 Eugene Garfield Memorial Lecture sponsored by @clarivate.com given by the amazing @mikethelwall.bsky.social on reconciling AI with human judgement in research assessment
The #STIENID2025 Conference is almost here! π
Bristol will host our annual gathering β a community where rigour meets generosity, debates spark new ideas, and collaborations (and friendships) last a lifetime.

Are you in Bristol next week for #STIENID2025? Then come and share your thoughts on developing success indicators research performing orgs can use to monitor and assess the progress of their #ResearchAssessment! π 11:15-12:30, Wed 3 Sept, Room 9, Ground Floor

A procenium arch style lecture theatre with lots of wood paneling. The arch is made of light coloured stone blocks.
Pretty fancy venue #STIENID2025
Keynote at #STIENID2025 about to start.
Prof Keri Facer talking about Measuring what Matters, and particularly about anticipating rather than sitting back and measuring after the fact.
Black elephant problem - a big thing that's new and different that no-one wants to talk and think about it.
Too difficult to think about things that are completely different.
What are we ignoring?

We're all set up at the #STIENID2025 conference. Come and see our poster and grab a copy of our annual report and a dinky UKRN sticker #ukrepro
I've ended up in a theory heavy session at #STIENID2025 - I have no formal background in sociology and I'm already feeling lost!
I always end up in the wrong session in a multitasking event...
First paper is form the #MetricsLiteracy project. They tested the use of videos to educate on the h-index. You can see one here:

Saw @crsugimoto.bsky.social talk at Metascience and now at #STIENID2025 - bought one of her books for our library last time...might end up buying more now!
Particularly interested in "Theories of
Informetrics and Scholarly Communication", I'm rubbish at theory. Maybe this is a good way to learn?
Interesting point from @crsugimoto.bsky.social about how often with a book you get a few reviews at proposal and then you work with an editor who really doesn't know anything about your field.
There's no dialogue in the process. That's very familiar to me.

At a session on Research mobility now. Looking at PhD careers and movement to start with. #STIENID2025
Love being at an institution like the @crick.ac.uk - I'm in a talk about how incidence of data availability statements is low, and good ones is even lower.
In biomedicine, they work, they make sense, people get it. We're sitting at 73.3% good DAS for 2025 (increasing all the time).

Fantastic keynote at #StiEnid2025 by Keri Facer about imagining our futures and different temporalities. A question was: if the university was to collapse now, what would you save? I'd save the networks of ppl across universities that have helped me.
