15 years ago when achievements were newish we had good industry pushback, my favorite voice on the topic was www.chrishecker.com/Achievements...
Partly inspired one of the 4 extra credits I wrote a ~decade ago, a design lens in the opposite direction by removing measuring, to focus on toy qualities
I definitely agree/feel like the requirement for cheevos is a big pillar of the gamepocalypse/indiepocalypse. There's certainly a niche place for them but it's very easy to execute their design badly.
A banner that reads "Game Workers Conference" in white text on a pink and blue background, alongside the ball and threads logo.
Do you work in games? Are you tired of corporate greed taking over our industry? Do you miss when industry events were by workers, for workers?
The United Videogame Workers of CWA, in partnership with other unions and worker-centered organizations, announce the #GameWorkersConference. May 22-23 โค๏ธโ๐ฅ
Should I put these for free in my kofi page?
I think I should.
a pixel art image of two mermaids and a puffin, sitting on some rocks with an ocean and cloudy sky in the background. Small silhouettes of birds are in the sky. On the right hand side of the image is a green mermaid with mauve hair; her proportions are of an average-height human. Her friend, on the left, is gold and orange, with red-pink hair. She has a thicker trunk and shorter limbs and tail, resembling a human with dwarfism. A large purple starfish and a small orange starfish sit near her, and a thick patch of seaweed is draped across the rock beneath her, near the bottom of the image. The puffin sits at the top of the rock, between the mermaids. In the top left corner is a little watermark/signature reading EB '23, for ElfyBean 2023; the name of the image's creator, and the year it was made.
3 years ago I heard about the legend of the mermaid bone farm, in Dwarf Fortress, which inspired this piece. Today, @blindirl.bsky.social put out a video about that forum thread!
heads-up: it's a pre-2010 forum thread, so click with care.

Woo! Great Birthday!
a poster for the game workers conference, taking place on may 22-23. in the bottom-left corner, a red stream of game tools & iconography emanate from a sun composed of abstract shapes. it's nestled, slightly askew inside another poster for a boshi's place watch party for the conference. boshi's face at the bottom left overlaps the conference poster slightly, with small illustrated decorations in pure blue scattered around the rest of the frame.
we're hosting a watch party for @gameworkerscon.bsky.social may 22-23! it's a free, online conference by & for workers organized by @videogameworkers.bsky.social.
please use the qr code to rsvp! there will be snacks, swag, park hangs during breaks, & we can learn how to build worker power together.

Same. I miss when I could upgrade my hardware. Going to have to start dumpster diving to find parts for my 10 year old rig soon.
the indie space is so rich right now but people are only exposed to the wildly lucrative edge cases. this year we're looking to showcase more games that expand peoples idea of what an โindie gameโ can be

I made a Gengar statue out of clay for a friend. The base is made out of cardboard with nickels for the base because it was cheaper than ordering weighted metal online.
I think you hit on the root of the problem with things like this. It's like you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Mmhmm. Player agency is an illusion after all.
I can try it out for you on a few Linux machines. I've got some time back today from meetings.

Congrats!+Sorry
Still working on stuff.
I've got some changing tombstones that'll swap around as you move areas and some other...thing?
Sorry it's gonna be a while before a new game but I'm still trying to get my life together.
Thanks for sticking with me all this time.
See you next week.
Thinking about the work some of the people at Realtime Worlds did when they were making Crackdown for X360. It was the best experience we had on the dev team, listening to the relatable placeholder VOs, bonding over the dev VOs wishing they kept them in as a toggleable option.
bring back when games were voice acted by the developers! i donโt want good voice acting anymore. give me the stuff someone had to power through reading, and itโs obvious whoever is being recorded is doing it as a last resort.
Hey, all. Sorry I've been less active lately. Things fell through and I'm looking for a new job now, so I will be less active for a while longer.
Challenge them to a competitive speedrun in a game the studio published.
