A garbage truck's worth of plastic enters the ocean every 60 seconds. I care about this so much I wrote an eco-horror novel about it, because the more I looked into it the more frightened I became. My family doesn't consume single-use plastics anymore.

It’s an engineering achievement, sure, but that’s all. It has no meaning in terms of human performance because a car or bicycle would win this, too. What’s the point? To watch a bunch of androids running races or performing a ballet? No thanks.

On this day in 2019, I witnessed one of the coolest things ever. A lenticular cloud lit-up by a setting sun over the Perito Morena Glacier in Argentina.

Watching #BEEF S2 and it's fantastic. The first episode is gripping. A middle-aged couple and a young 20-something couple are in conflict and Carey Mulligan delivers this zinger of a line early in E2: "These kids don't know who they messed with. We have so many more years of being petty."

One of my #life #goals is to fill the gaps in my Uncanny #X-Men collection from No. 1 to current. That is a tall order given I have gaps of entire years. But I do make progress, book by book. Today's acquisition:

'NYC is cooked': Business leaders and Wall Streeters erupt over proposed luxury second-home tax Kathy Hochul and Zohran Mamdani ruffled some feathers when they introduced a proposal to tax secondary homes in New York valued at over $5 million.

I find the reactions to this both funny and galling -- it tells you exactly why it's needed. The effective tax rate for the highest earners in the 1950s (ya know, when things were "better") was around 45-50% w/ deductions and loopholes factored in. And this proposal is only for 2nd homes.

Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land.

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem, builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?

Blake's "Jerusalem" has been on repeat in my head lately. Mainly, I see our current situation in America reflected in its longing for a renewed, more egalitarian society. Probably helps that I've always liked the poem:

Patton Oswalt is going to read the third book in the Talisman trilogy. OTHER WORLDS THAN THESE will be out in October. I'm totally stoked that he agreed to do it. Spoiler alert: There's a character in the book who's a stand-up comedian. His name is...Payton Orville.
Coincidence? I think not.

As someone who grew up watching Shuttle lunches with my own eyes, I’m ecstatic to see the overwhelming joy about Artemis II. Renewed interest in NASA is long overdue, and brings a lot of hope and national pride at a time when those attributes are in short supply. 👍 🛰️🚀🧑‍🚀

Amazing book. I've mourned other creators -- writers, actors, etc. -- but Mead's death hit different. I printed out a bunch of his illustrations across his career on 5x7 cards and put them up all over my place. They're still up. He's the GOAT.

NASA has always exemplified what can be achieved for all mankind. SPACE X has always exemplified what can be achieved for one man.

I was talking to my kids the other day about cyclical patterns of history and pointed out that we're in a mirror of 1968: a pointless war, civil rights battles, a corrupt President, and an awe-inspiring #NASA mission to the moon that illuminates what humanity is capable of achieving.
