Frederick Wiseman - rare case where a 96-year-old filmmaker’s death feels tragic because they had so much more left to do. Uninterrupted streak of curiosity, empathy, wisdom, and quiet anger, ended only by the reality of living in a human body.

As a film critic, I honestly don’t think you should give a shit about what film critics think (Like what you like! It’s OK! You don't need anyone else's permission or approval!).

But if anyone was curious, here’s my favourite ten* films of 2024 in no particular order:

The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears (Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani, 2013)

Two filmmakers I'm so proud to call friends, H+B are wholly original and driven by such extraordinary talent and passion.

I also co-edited this book about them with dear @tjinimin.bsky.social qldff.com/store/The-St...

All of that is true. They’re also dealing with a substantial increase of projects being managed as so many Covid-overlapping projects had extensions.

I was thrilled to be on the film jury for SXSW Sydney, and could not be prouder that the Best Feature Film award went to A Grand Mockery, a bold experimental genre film (think Bogan Bela Tarr) shot on 16mm from Brisbane that is exactly what Australia needs more of www.sxswsydney.com/news/screen-...

I think that’s part of their general deal with A24 in Australia. Certainly hasn’t guaranteed other A24 titles.

It wasn’t very good.

Caught up on it. Surprisingly indiscreet from Fitzgerald, whether on Gosden's lack of succession plan (true though a board problem), dislike of advertising positions (clearly true), & that the programmers quit prior to hearing about Bertolin (considering timing, I presumed they had heard in advance)

Hopefully the loss of half the team registers somewhere. I just read Sandra's post and Ant's follow-up (I had read his email.)
