My absolute favourite part of the Marathon games has always been the S'pht Compilers. So here's a drawing of one, in all of its glory. Taking a little from a few different designs but drawing mainly from the first classic game

That said I do find the two different types of players you mentioned take these games way too seriously, and its not like its impossible to have content that appeals to PvE players and content that appeals to PvP players in the same game without one diminishing the other
