New in the Journal of Applied Communication Research: Why engaging directly with communities strengthens research measurement.
“Our work shows how critical it is to go into the community. Engagement strengthens measurement.”

I’ve gotten so much better over the years at ending work at a decent hour, letting my brain relax, and going to bed at a decent time.
The one thing that still manages to trap me in the “but I’m on a roll” and “I have to finish this section” mindsets… obliterating my routine?
Working on syllabi 😭
Tomorrow (Jan 15) the 🌏 communication science community receives the outcomes of the reviews for the Int'l Communication Association conference.
Remember: rejection stings, always, so be gentle.
And: senior scholars also get rejected 🙋♂️
And: ICA is here 🦋👏 @icahdq.bsky.social 🚀🚀🚀

It's "circle back" season. Godspeed.
Uh oh…
Exhausted doesn’t cover it.
But geez, students will sometimes just give me moments that remind me of the good and/or why I love what I do.
Still ready to for it to be a wrap on this semester. Yet, thankful for the students who gave it so many bright spots.
So excited about this! Thrilled to be doing this with @christyjwl.bsky.social
12 TOs in one half. My gracious. We’ve got to get this together during halftime.
My goodness to this 12-2 (?) run…
I appreciate that my Tar Heels are at least providing some excitement for those of us struggling to stay awake to watch them in the Maui Invitational.
Hope you made it home last night!
Of course Skylink in Dallas would malfunction today w/ a short connection time.
Racing to my gate I realized my great idea of going straight to campus - incorrect. I have to stop by home for office keys. I never take them for fear of losing them.
When does this semester end? It’s been a doozy.
I know this is a thing that happens. But this being the semester where delayed flight = extra night stay + rushing from the airport straight to campus to have meetings and teach…feels on brand. @commfox.bsky.social told me I was going to need and be grateful for the 2 days we do get off this week 😂
Still thinking about @sarahjtracy.bsky.social and her jeans analogy. Such a helpful panel.
Yay!!! Safe travels. Always excited to see you. My students just read one of your pieces and were astounded/impressed when I said I might see you this week ☺️
Excited to see old friends!! Touched down this afternoon for #NCA24 and have already seen so many people dear to me. I know I’ll see more tomorrow. My heart is full.
I realized today wound up being an Abbott Elementary themed teaching day 😂. In my large class we watched the clip where Jacob confronts Melissa and Barbara about their use of AI. In my small class, two of my students told me the fictional character I reminded them of was Janine. Today was fun.
🤣🤣🤣
You’re right. You’d think I’d be used to it by now. It doesn’t help having a partner who gets the whole week off so you have a clear reminder of how things could be 😂 When next Thursday and Friday roll around I will be grateful for the space.
Really working on being excited about #NCA24. My brain is consumed w/ the billion things that must be done in the next few weeks as the semester ends.
Maybe this is also just me (again) struggling w/ this whole no fall break, no week off…just Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving thing. 🥴
📌
I’m ready to be off the ride that is this semester.
Always rough b/c of grief related dates.
Add: back to teaching w/ new (to me) x-large blended course, surgery mid semester, the past week as a Black woman of reproductive age studying health equity.
Don’t have much to give right now. I want off.
I planned to call their attention to it anyway but many of them pulled it out on their own in their reflections.
I hope if they take nothing else out of my course, they remember the connections between communication (generation, access, use), power, and inequity long after my class.
“…control of communication is power and that whoever has the capacity to generate, access, use, and distribute information enjoys social power and advantages that accrue from it (Tichenor et al., 1980; Viswanath & Demerara, 1999).” - Viswanath & Emmons, 2009, p. 285.
My students read about communication inequalities today for class. This quote from one of our pieces and how it struck them has been stuck in my brain.
I last taught this course in spring ‘22. In previous semesters, this was not a quote that resonated with many students. This year was different…
Thanks! Excited to build connections here.
I’m a #healthcomm scholar who spends a lot of time thinking about how communication intersects w/ racism and marginalization to impact health inequities. Much that work has examined how communication in and outside of clinical encounters influences medical mistrust, particularly for Black Americans.
Time to really actively shift over here. Looking for my #healthcomm #commsky folks first.
