Imo there has to be a recognition that teachers cannot be 'on' 100% of the time because it's too exhausting. I've just seen someone saying that everyone must be learning 100% of the time in class. This kind of fervent, unrealistic claim is not good for staff or children's wellbeing or mental health.

Removal Reluctance I had to remove a student for disrupting my lesson. But, like many teachers, my reluctance to do so meant I removed them too late. Here’s why, and what I should have done differently.

New post!

On removing students from lessons, and the pain and angst it brings.

Please share if you can :)

I've posted a screenshot of this post on the cess pit that is Twitter because I don't think they even monitor their accounts here. Given that the DfE has previously kept screenshots of my tweets and discussed them in emails, maybe they will see it.

Angela Rayner accidentally pays less tax than she should have, resigns, and the media gives her hell.

Nigel Farage deliberately pays less tax than he should have, and the media gives him a free pass.

That, right there, is the problem.

Who's coming to this year's #researchED National Conference this weekend? Reckon I'd better start plugging my session...

I'll be talking about how to go about translating all the 'mainstream' edu research to support pupils with SEND (including those in a specialist settings) 🔬 #rED25

Back from exams analysis and I need to work on the “top end” those grades seem elusive in our mixed ability classes with long tails (thinking mostly at A level). Is there anyone getting lots of Bs and above across the sciences? Can you tell me what you have in place?

I’ve been thinking about students not wanting to answer questions incorrectly.
When do you think this sets in?
I teach in a secondary setting and I think the pivot is year 8/9. Do you agree?

This is part of it. We do mostly teach in specialisms though. Definitely need some more subject CPD time.

Thinking a screen free challenge but struggling to make it not tokenistic.

Can’t help but feel after a parents evening that my department had become to PowerPoint heavy. Got lots of feedback that the students feel like they are being read to.
I’m sure others feel this way too but please let me know how you got out of this rut.

Do you explicitly teach the working scientifically part of the GCSE spec or is it all interwoven when you do anything practical? Trying to get the balance right

The explanation, it needs to be clear and avoid misconceptions.
Frequent checks are vitally important still.

Setting up a science CPD library in our main prep room and seeking out some lesser known books to add to the collection. Which books got you thinking differently about science education?
