😔 There has been no real improvement in children’s oral health for 10 years. Our first report in September 2024 called for urgent action
😀 Since then ambitious new initiatives have been announced.
💪 Sustained partnership working is needed for these to fulfil their potential

Good to see early years supervised daily toothbrushing introduced in the most socioeconomically deprived areas in England.
We have been doing this on a universal not targeted basis in all nurseries in Scotland for the best part of 20 years www.childsmile.nhs.uk
Many young people are experiencing poor oral health - and supervised toothbrushing programmes help, but how can we roll them out more widely?

Lots of media interest today in our recent paper about expansion of supervised toothbrushing programmes: www.sheffield.ac.uk/news/more-wo...
Results of the survey of 5 year olds in 2024 are published today. Still high prevalence and wide inequalities which have not reduced

Process evaluations can be independent studies or conducted simultaneously with outcome evaluations such as RCTs. They examine the processes through which an intervention generates outcomes.
We have published 2 important & very different process evaluations in @commdentoralepi.bsky.social 👇
Process evaluations are really important in helping to understand how (oral) health interventions work.
They are particularly useful for interventions that include a number of interacting components operating in different ways & also when interventions address complex problems.

Really pleased to share this new paper from BRUSH research project exploring barriers & facilitators to implementation of supervised toothbrushing programmes. Shows just how important both the formal & informal factors are @commdentoralepi.bsky.social
