Justice Blackmun (dissent in Bailey): "The atrocities and inhuman conditions of prison life in America are almost unbelievable"
I explore ongoing atrocities at US carceral sites through the lens of ICL in my article: American Carceral Atrocities in the Penn JIL

An explicit, unequivocal public statement of genocidal intent….

Hooray! So well deserved. They’re lucky to have you!
I continue to believe that pregnant people should not be Incarcerated. (And really, should anyone be?)

Andrew Cuomo is a bad man pulling on a dangerous thread because he wants to win a job he doesn’t actually want to do in a place he hates
Second, I argue that a subset of the worst of these harms may involve the ongoing commission of inhumane acts as crimes against humanity.
I make this argument in two registers. First, I argue the harms caused by this system involve the ongoing active causation of severe harms on a massive scale, rendering the atrocity label descriptively apt.
Delighted to announce my article, American Carceral Atrocities, is forthcoming in the Penn Journal of IL and is up on SSRN (papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....)
The piece theorizes the sprawling US carceral system as a system of ongoing atrocity violence, perpetrated against detainees.

Israel committing genocide in Gaza, world's leading experts say
If Israel is willing to target and kill journalists in a hospital with double tap strikes over a camera (a fucking camera, like WTF), what is it doing when it believes there are actual Hamas figures?
These war crimes will not stop until those responsible are held to account.
"As of February 2025, the only reasonable inference from the cumulative evidence is that Israel’s conduct in Gaza constitutes genocide." - @itamann.bsky.social
Eleven international law experts were asked: is there genocide in Gaza. Nine said yes. www.lto.de/recht/hinter...

Spoiler alert: a virtual unanimous “yes”, with the sole uncertainty being the mens rea of individual perps, and whether can be attributed to state of Israel as a whole.

In response to the formal request of Minister Riyad Mansour, State of Palestine's Permanent Observer to the UN, during the August 10 UN Security Council Meeting, for "an immediate international protection force to save the Palestinian people from certain death," DAWN issues the following statement:
So ashamed and sad to hear about this from my alma mater 😣
Time Has Run Out: Mass Starvation in Gaza and the Global Imperative at www.justsecurity.org/117962/mass-...
"a lot of the children have already passed the point of no return where [...] even refeeding could potentially cause death itself.” This is at minimum extermination as a CAH
The UN has determined that the “worst-case scenario of Famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip.”
Alex DeWaal and @tomdannenbaum.bsky.social call for all States to fulfill their moral, legal, and basic human imperatives now by ensuring comprehensive humanitarian action.
“The question of whether the Israeli government is committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza has generated intense debate. Many have asked: If Israel were truly committing this crime, wouldn’t it look different? Wouldn’t it be faster, larger in scale or more spectacular in form?”
Two political prisoners in Iran 🇮🇷, Behrouz Ehsani & Mehdi Hassani, were executed today. According to @amnesty.org, they were tried in a 5-minute trial. Stop executions, arbitrary detention, unfair trials and torture. Urgent action is needed. @un-spexperts.bsky.social
Very rare for the ICRC:
"Every political hesitation" in failing to bring the "abhorrent" practice of extreme deprivation and indiscriminate attacks to an immediate and decisive end "will forever be judged as a collective failure to preserve humanity in war"
States "must do more"
I wrote a few things on starvation/famine and ICL nearly a decade ago. I figured it was not going to be relevant moving forward, yet he we r, witnessing at bare minimum a slow process of extermination (as a CAH) unfold in Gaza. It’s just so sad and pathetic.
This is a thorough explainer on the escalation between DOJ and the NJ federal courts.
