Well, it seems to be one of those days. So far my watch has broken. And the vacuum cleaner has blown up. Next? 🙄

Thank you, my friend!!
My first Gramophone Magazine Icons piece on the great Eleanor Steber (well, it would be, wouldn't it) is in the May issue, where you'll also find me writing about Joan Sutherland and Sondra Radvanovsky

La bague d'oreille va bien ........ 😘
Meanwhile, hay fever has begun .... 🤧
Definitely one of the great covers in music history ….
There's quite a lot of 40s Ansermet that we don't hear much of, alas.........
Manuel de Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain was first performed in Madrid on this day in 1916. So here it is, played by Jacqueline Blancard in 1942, with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Ernest Ansermet

Ponchieli's La Gioconda was first performed in Milan on this day 150 years ago. So here are Eva Marton and Mariana Cioromila singing (and how) the great soprano-mezzo showdown in Act II, in Berlin, in 1998. I was lucky enough to be in the audience for this ...... 😀

Some wonderful American TV footage from 1966 of Lotte Lenya singing Marc Blitzstein's English version of Pirate Jenny from Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera. Weill died on this day in 1950

I think the Ming Wong finishes this weekend, I'm afraid, but it's worth an hour of your time, if it's still on. The newly re-worked Renaissance galleries are stunning, though, if you haven't seen already them!
Back from London, and a trip to the National Gallery to look at the Raphaels, the Pollaiuolo Saint Sebastian, and the Ming Wong video installation based on it, an enigmatic, sexy piece that draws on Derek Jarman, Yeats ("the ceremony of innocence" again) as well as Renaissance art.
No. I'd never heard of him, either. Have just had to Google him to find out what, and why, and when ........
God, almighty! I'd be screaming the place down ........
Evelyn Lear and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing the final scene of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, with the Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera and Otto Gerdes. In German, but utterly stunning. Eugene Onegin was first performed on this day in 1879.
