Trade-off: REST APIs vs Terraform

REST: No state file, works from a browser, simpler for single-VM.
Terraform: Better for multi-resource infra with dependencies.

For one VM + one router + some secrets? REST was the right call.

What broke:

- GCP org policy blocked SA key creation. 2 hours to diagnose.
- SSH connects as non-root, but everything lives under /root/. Every command needs sudo.
- Delete button only removed DB record. VM kept running. Cost kept accruing.
- API keys disappeared after VM resets.

One-click deploy from a Next.js dashboard.

Raw GCP REST API calls. No Terraform. No CLI.

Firewall rules, service accounts, secrets, Cloud NAT, VM creation - all via HTTP from the browser.

409 (already exists) = success. Makes it idempotent.

The setup:

- GCP Compute Engine VM (e2-small, ~$7/mo)
- No external IP - Cloud NAT for outbound, IAP for SSH
- 10+ secrets in GCP Secret Manager
- 400-line startup script that bootstraps everything on boot
- Systemd service with auto-restart

Everyone demos AI agents running locally.
