PanSTARRS and Planets

Explanation: Near the eastern horizon before sunrise, Comet C/2025 R3 PanSTARRS is getting brighter. Readily visible in binoculars and small telescopes, the comet may be just on the verge of naked-eye visibility from dark sky sites. Though it was not quite apparent to the eye, PanSTARRS is still easy to spot in this camera image taken on April 16. In the view from a volcanic peak overlooking France's Reunion Island, planet Earth, the comet shares eastern predawn skies with naked-eye planets Mars and Mercury and fainter Neptune. Saturn is hiding behind the low cloudbank that doesn't quite hide an old crescent Moon. This is a good weekend for northern hemisphere comet watchers to try to catch PanSTARRS an hour or so before sunrise, as the comet grows brighter approaching its perihelion on April 19. On April 26 the comet makes its closest approach to our fair planet but by then will be difficult to see in the solar glare. Good views of this comet PanSTARRS in late April and early May will be from the southern hemisphere.

This work was a collaborative effort between our lab and clinical experts at UPK Basel. The parallel approach of using mouse circuit and human patient data is likely the most promising approach we have to understanding the mechanism of psychiatric treatments.

In our study, if a mouse hemisphere had a seizure but no CSD, there was no increase in Fos. The plasticity only happened where the CSD traveled.
We also saw that the EEG metrics clinicians use to predict patient success correlate with CSD in our mice.

Eventually after filtering, we saw that oscillations co-occur with CSD. We ended up combining EEG with widefield imaging and saw that the calcium signal held beautifully to the EEG. Most likely, AC-coupled patient EEG is simply blind to the CSD, and can only pick up the oscillatory response.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the 1st time mouse ECS is validated as a pre-clinical model of human ECS based on direct neuronal responses.
However, during the very first ECS we recorded, I completely missed the oscillations, and had a proverbial tree (i.e. a CSD) hiding the forest:

We started by measuring these oscillations following a single electroconvulsive stimulation (ECS) in mice and patients. They look extremely similar - one could mistake the mouse response for the human one (that actually happened when I sent the first figures draft around🙃).

There is nearly a century of research on the effects of ECT, and it has become clear that the "seizure" it induces does not predict therapeutic effects. In patient EEG, the immediate response to ECT are beautifully synchronous oscillations stabilizing around 1-5 Hz before abrutply ending.

We've come a long way since the 1st ECT by Ugo Cerletti and team in 1938 (the history of ECT is worth a read btw).
To transform ECT from psychiatry’s most potent intervention into a targeted, reliable therapy, we need to fully characterize what it ECT "does" to the brain.
